Clients can have a pretty thick backend layer actually, caching large amounts of notes and giving the user additional options for sorting and filtering them on top of what is included directly in the Nostr relay standard.

I'm upset about KYC and AML laws. Individuals are the ones who define what is valueable and what is not; to try to control the transmission of value through the regulation of currency is a fruitless endevor, and can only hurt the weakest and most vulnerable among us.

Markup languages go against Nostr's standard notes. You should look into long form notes. Otherwise your notes won't be super portable.
