Its been a pursuit of mine to be super early on platforms, protocols, operating systems, since around 2003.

Over that time, ive seen similar phenomena repeat in different ways, and I've come to the conclusion that focusing primarily on adoption is a sign of doom for a platform or protocol. Also, having a core culture which focuses everything on mass adoption/popularity is a redflag warning to not build a presence that you rely on, on that platform or protocol.

I dont mean new user experience should be ignored. I mean, when you see an abnormal focus on "getting new users", be wary. Priorities are being set by inexperienced, immature, and possibly (probably) greedy individuals.

Protocols/platforms/OSes that focus primarily on improving the protocol itself, making it faster, smaller, more stable, easier to develop on, and even try new things which occasionally break things, seem to stick around, and grow an incredibly loyal base.

There is a point coming where people will lose access to their bank accounts. It will cause mass panic.

CBDCs of course, protected by the State for your safety. No more evil Bitcoin terrorist money. And the people will worship the State and praise them and beg for DigID to access it

The collective fear regarding the FinCen proposal is that tens of thousands will be jailed for political reasons.

That's the narrative that they would like you to think. But the reality that was learned during the French revolution and every time a western government has gotten too big for its britches is to get burned down to the ground. As we learned during the Block Size War, a minority of intransigent and belligerent maxis will destroy anyone with fiat-based incentives. And that is what these guys have. They may have the majority of the money and power but they don't actually believe in anything worth dying for.

This is why the colonies in the US went to war and won against the far superior British navy/army over a 2% tea tax. It was the principals that motivated people. In case you are thinking the we don't still have that today, just check in with the Zoomers. I have some Zoomers as employees at work. Despite immense pressure from corporate they will not come back into the office full time and no they aren’t putting in ridiculous overtime for promise of a piddly bonus at the end of the year. And the powers that be are finally starting to realize it - they are dead meat. Their entire business model is based on using the younger generation as free sweat equity for the Boomer's 401(k) plan and hefty medical bills. But the Zoomers won't pay up.

They (and the rest of us) have nothing left to lose. Everything worth having has been taken from us. The majority of us can’t afford to live – and forget raising the future generation. People, especially the younger generations, are fed up. The people in power see that and they are afraid of us. They are afraid of encryption, they are afraid of decentralization, they are afraid of the ways we employ to ensure free speech. And they are about to learn what every bourgeois learns every few generations from the proletariat - there are many more of us than there are of them. They stole our future and we are coming to take it back.

Sometimes when I post about freedom, people say, yeah, wait until the state comes for you, puts a gun to your head. But isn’t imagining that kind of thing all the time itself the prison?

I’m not saying it can’t happen, but no one is forcing you to think about it while it’s not yet happening, and if it does happen, then it happens, and you experience that.

Why are you trading away your freedom to say what you think is true because of something theoretical?

Ironically the more everyone fears the theoretical, the more likely it’s going to happen. The more people ignore it and behave as free citizens, the less likely they would dare to do it.

Engineers are typically more interested in things than in people. That’s why they become engineers.

I think more specifically, software engineers are more interested in ideas.

I got into software engineering because I was obsessed with the experience of a customer’s eyes dilating and then silently going “ooooh,” when they encounter a product that’s going to change their lives for the first time. I remember my first iPad, and when Steve Jobs presented it. He described it as “magical.” A better word could not have been used. I didn’t need to have explained to me why this was going to change the world, or how I did things. I instinctively knew. To me, this is the highest pursuit of software engineering - software that needs no explanation or justification.

I find this often puts me at odds with other developers both IRL at my job, and online. I roll my eyes as a 1028th way of doing something backend is created for a task that works well enough, and brings no user-facing improvement to the table.

I will never stop finding joy in the products that are magical though, nor will I stop trying to be a wizard.
