nostr:npub1dgc20rwct3mfd884e2240pqpzhzlz6xm7laky670vnd5um3xxkzsaj4yrt lots of journalists judge fediverse with terms of corporate growth and as such it may fail to grow as fast as various other corporate services, but they forget itβs not a corporation, itβs a constellation of communities. Their metrics are wrong and so is their analysis.
nostr:npub1x92wj9620agjy3skm9k7x3ngnvecqrk7uywwm72lmes2m9ur5dwstjf9ku Yeah, but I even see this kind of feedback from regular people, that Mastodon needs to implement features quickly or it's going to "lose the race." It's not in a race. It has no burn rate, no cashflow, no shareholder pressure. It just exists as an emergent function of people agreeing to use a protocol. It disappears when the last two people stop using it.

Mastodon is just one of the numerous free software ActivityPub implementing instances that make up the fediverse.

do note that while it's not subject to whims of "a billionaire", it's now subject to the whims of a few hundred neurodivergent server administrators which means some or all of your data and connections can still vanish in thin air with no warning, for any touchy reason, and frequently does, unless you're hosting your own, which comes with its own problems...
nostr:npub10pf4e9cxd0a06cy3uw57e67dkxjsau45qct066ud9vxdapcaldtq2ly6s8 Yeah, I'm hosting my own server, so I'm immune to that. If there was a way to make it much easier to host your own server, that would be a great improvement. I could suggest thousands of improvements, but that's not my point. I'll still take individual admins over a billionaire ruled by shareholders.

The virtual version of meeting up with a fan for a pint at the pub and chatting for an hour.
A Bronze Age Arrowhead was Made Out of a Meteorite
Archeologists have discovered a Bronze Age arrowhead in an ancient Swiss settlement made from a nickel-iron meteorite. The object is tiny, just 2.9 grams, but its composition doesn't match any surrounding metal deposits, including a nearby meteorite-strewn field. The researchers propose that it was a piece of the Kaalijarv meteorite, which fell in Estonia about 3,500 years ago and produced many small fragments.

Creators... talk to your fans
As an online creator, my experience can often be negative, with trolls and targeted harassment. It can make me feel a little sad.
For the last few years, I've asked all my new patrons if I can personally interview them. To get feedback about what we do but also to just talk with someone who enjoys and appreciates our content. It feels really good, lifts my spirits, and reminds me why I do this.
If you're a creator, figure out a way to talk directly to your fans
nostr:npub1dgc20rwct3mfd884e2240pqpzhzlz6xm7laky670vnd5um3xxkzsaj4yrt Wouldn't they have a better chance of powering up sensibly: the technologies would be constrained to experiments at first, mass production could be more challenging (more advances required) and overusing combustion just would not be a thing.
nostr:npub198zzdmvkla20jw4aghk5a3ykmkeex97fgpreysc7wuq0r4hsa8jsjjnquz Maybe, but I wonder how far you'd get if you couldn't even make fire?
Spacecraft, Landers and Rovers Could be Recycled for Parts on the Moon
When flying to the Moon, every kilogram matters, and recycling metal could be an effective way to build valuable new parts out of existing spacecraft. A new ESA project has demonstrated how new parts could be 3D printed out of recycled metal while minimizing the amount of lunar dust contaminating the process. This method turns metal into a powder printed layer by layer and then "sintered" or baked to give it more strength. We'll have to decide what's a historical artifact of spaceflight and what's grist for the space mill.

Do Technological Civilizations Depend on Atmospheric Oxygen?
Our modern technological civilization wouldn't have been possible without open-air combustion, which can only happen when atmospheric oxygen levels reach at least 18%. A new study asks if this could be a bottleneck for developing other advanced civilizations. Without at least 18% oxygen, fires won't easily burn, so technologies like steam power and combustion engines wouldn't be possible. Earth has only reached that level of atmospheric composition in the last 500 million years.

Curiosity Had to Route Around a 23-Degree Slope to Reach a Fascinating Field of Craters
NASA's Curiosity Rover is continuing to explore the slopes of Mount Sharp; Its next destination required navigating up a 23-degree slope covered in sand and rocks to reach a region covered in small impact craters. Drivers have attempted the slope a few times over the last few months and were forced to back the rover up again to try somewhere else. They finally gave up the direct approach and found a detour that added a few weeks but allowed the rover to crest the slope and explore the crater-filled terrain.

It's always a short-term outlook. Look what happened with Google+, if they'd just kept it going, they'd be the top network by now.
