Very interesting! I respectfully disagree on the complaint about Spark not helping with the security budget as it tries to reduce on-chain transaction footprint. I see it as a scaling solution and I'm not worried at all that miners will get in to problem with their funding. I'm glad the 2017/2018 mempool situation is over now (for now). We should however focus on people not keeping their live savings on exchanges. That's where the transactions should come from.

This video by Nic Laporte shows how the surrounding of Arnhem Bitcoin City is seen by a foreigner. Great to see this as a local. (Not a bitcoin video, but very enjoyable nonetheless) h/t nostr:nprofile1qydhwumn8ghj76twdejhytnnv43xzum5d9uzuum0vd5kzmqpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqqyqrx8x3cdjwpq9ppwc3ve085pyyvfudqcvlz87xk668540m9t78hzh692k6

The Dutch bitcoin companies have won a lawsuit against the regulator.

Good to read that the lawsuit against DNB (the Dutch central bank) has been won on appeal. I actively contributed to this at the start in my former role as chairman of the United Bitcoin Companies Netherlands (VBNL). Winning a lawsuit against a party who's main job is to make sure everyone is compliant is a *huge* thing. However, the damage is done; Some companies are gone already.

If you want to join for dinner at the pre-meetup then please RSVP:

I broke open an old piggy bank and found foreign currency left over from holidays abroad with my parents as a child.

I don't remember how I got this specific piggy bank as I've never been a customer of "SpaarBank Rotterdam".

Stay up, don't give in to the sleep. Hate it though. Or is the problem you still wake up at 3:40 am?

Thank you! Interesting to read. So El Salvador can keep their current BTC but are not allowed to gain BTC. Is this denominated in USD or in BTC?

Bitcoin Pizza Day in Arnhem. First pizza dinner at one of the 3 pizzerias that accept bitcoin here (remember all the merchants are saving the bitcoin in Arnhem, no instant conversion).

After that we had a debate about OP_RETURN where I took Oceans/Knots side and nostr:nprofile1qyx8wumn8ghj7cnjvghxjmcpz4mhxue69uhk2er9dchxummnw3ezumrpdejqqg8g6e7yxkj2tycyu9q59q8f2th7z7lyy48u5fu3d0mrl8mnu49t5s02kql2 defended Bitcoin Core's side (we could have changed positions). It was very educational and fun to see how Aaron gave in after my final argument 😂

I believe you did your part Ralph, for instance, Hijman Ongerijmd is now also accepting bitcoin. If I'm the only one spending bitcoin in Arnhem, the project would not have existed today. I understand how you feel, but hope you change your mind well before a decade passes :)

Molly White is my favorite crypto critic. I wish I could zap her some sats.

Awesome newsletter.

I've just watched the Netflix documentary Cyberbunker and I'm surprised to learn I bought my first computer (486DX2-66) at the shop in Arnhem of the main character of the documentary. It's an awesome docu about a very intriguing story.

I'm in Paramaribo now, and got this taxi driver to install a lightning wallet. The guy once ran into OneCoin and was a bit reluctant but still want to give bitcoin a try.

Feel free to "zap" him some sats 👍

✍️ A Short Story from Jordan: Selling Bitcoin, Longing, and the Unexpected

Five years ago, I sold some Bitcoin to fund a solo trip to Jordan.

I didn’t understand back then, nor that you could use Bitcoin as money.

At that point, I’d wiped my feet on the Bitcoin rabbit hole's doormat but hadn’t ventured further inside.

Anyway. I flew into Aqaba, rented a car, and headed north.

On the way to one of the Wonders of the World—Petra—I got caught in a uniquely dangerous snowstorm.

It was a surreal experience that taught me something unexpected: it can snow in the desert. ❄️🏜️

For some of these kids, it was their first time seeing snow.

I arrived at Petra armed with a series of podcasts about Wadi Rum's history.

I walked over 30,000 steps across what remains one of my favorite places in the world.

Listening to historians unravel the stories behind this ancient wonder made it all the more magical.

I didn’t need a guide, and I certainly didn’t need a donkey to get around, thanks to the podcasts. 🎧🐪

Petra is breathtaking—truly a must-visit.

From there, I drove north to the Dead Sea, from which you can see all the way to Israel.

I thought I'd go for a run along the absolutely mad coastline that's chock-full of salty rocks before going for a swim.

Fun fact: You can't actually swim in the Dead Sea.

I was the idiot who brought swimming goggles, thinking you could. Classic Brit.

Of course you can't swim—you're far too buoyant! 🤿🌊

I mooched about; I ate far too much surprisingly delicious Jordanian food, even finding Jordanian beer, before making my way back south, the trip complete.

Solo travel always leaves me thinking:

"This is amazing—but wouldn’t it be even better to share it with someone?"

And yet, here’s the kicker: the Bitcoin I sold to fund the trip would now be worth 12 times what it was.

I could be sitting on a cool £9,000 today. 9 THOUSAND POUNDS MY GOD.

Instead, I’ve got these damn, rather lovely memories.

Even better, I set this silly selfie—shown here—as the first picture on my dating profile a few days later.

No it was Bumble, not Tinder, since you asked.

And for whatever reason, a rather wonderful soul swiped right on it (yeah, she's probably more silly than me).

And we’ve been together for the past 5 years.

I couldn't be happier. ❤️

So yeah, HODLing Bitcoin is guaranteed to build you a better future.

…but sometimes, so can selling. 🧡

Is the owner of the grocery store there? I've got a suggestion...

BitKassa helped Etos Rokkeveen (Zoetermeer) to accept #bitcoin. Who will be the first to pay with bitcoin here? (I'd love to see proof of it)

Who will join us on the winter edition of the BitcoinWalk Arnhem?

Saturday January 18th 10:30am. We'll have lunch afterwards at Le Grand Cafe (bitcoin accepted there)
