One of the greatest NHL players ever, he won five Stanley Cups in his career from 1914 to 1929.
In 329 games, he had 247 goals and 85 assists for 333 points.

Today in 1855, the HMS Resolute was found adrift off the coast of Baffin Island.
It had been abandoned by its crew 1,900 km away when it became trapped in the ice in 1853.
In 1879, it was salvaged for timber & the Resolute Desk was built from the ship's timber.


Today in 1918, the first civilian outbreak of the Spanish Flu in Canada occurs as servicemen from Europe arrive on the ship, the Araguaya, in Halifax Harbour.
The epidemic will kill 50,000 Canadians.

Ranking the 250 Greatest Canadians: 69 - Oscar Peterson
Called the Maharaja of the Keyboard, Oscar Peterson was one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. With over 200 recordings, he won multiple Grammys and other awards in his legendary career.

Ranking the 250 Greatest Canadians: 70 - Buffy Sainte-Marie
In her career, she has been one of Canada's greatest singer-songwriters. The first Indigenous person to win an Oscar, she also has a Gemini, and five Junos. She also has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.
Today in 1896, Raymond Massey was born in Toronto.
The brother of the first Canadian-born Governor General, Vincent Massey, Raymond became an actor. He earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in 1940.
He portrayed Dr. Gillespie on Dr. Kildare from 1961-1966
He died in 1983

Today in 2006, Glenn Ford died. Born in Sainte-Christine-d'Auvergne, Quebec in 1916, he was the great-nephew of Sir John A. Macdonald.
In his career from 1937 to 1991, he earned three Golden Globe nominations, a BAFTA nomination and has an asteroid named for him.

Today in 2008, Killer Kowalski died.
Born in Windsor in 1926, his wrestling career lasted from the 1940s to the 1980s.
Portrayed in the ring as a ruthless villain, he was a vegan who never drank or smoked.
He also started a wrestling school that trained many famous wrestlers.

Today in 1972, the Soviet team arrived in Montreal & stayed at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. They began to train twice a day at the St. Laurent Arena.
For two weeks previous they trained in Russia on Eastern Time to acclimatize themselves.

Today in 1972, Rosemary Brown is elected as an MLA in British Columbia.
She becomes the first black woman to sit in the Legislative Assembly in Canada.
Also in 1972, she became the first Black woman to run for the leadership of a federal party in Canada.
She serves until 1986.
