nostr:npub1u83gudwdfwjngz5eqxkrnpvsuydvqwjxwz0majvehqrh62804hfq8yr2s5 nostr:npub16sz45sngz7k7ha48c9gekuaxc6gntujtynsfukdx6807m6lv7z5sgw378f yeah i sped up gamespeed to get to the good stuff. really it was just supposed to show the general direction they were headed (toward the sun instead of away from)
nostr:npub1kdyzl44h6mhyl4djtf20w0t7avsy09umshq2k2czjf62ps774phqcd2hnf nostr:npub16sz45sngz7k7ha48c9gekuaxc6gntujtynsfukdx6807m6lv7z5sgw378f I got a good laugh out of the video but also :oof: when 3D stuff goes wrong for me usually the only way I manage to fix it is literally doing the math out by hand step by step, often paired with drawing a diagram (or several). and then verifying the intermediate values at various spots in the code. and it's almost invariably been something really dumb on my part in the end
nostr:npub1u83gudwdfwjngz5eqxkrnpvsuydvqwjxwz0majvehqrh62804hfq8yr2s5 nostr:npub16sz45sngz7k7ha48c9gekuaxc6gntujtynsfukdx6807m6lv7z5sgw378f this is probably the most painful thing I've done on this project since land generation. It's like pulling teeth
nostr:npub16sz45sngz7k7ha48c9gekuaxc6gntujtynsfukdx6807m6lv7z5sgw378f got renderdoc working on my new distro and it looks like the shadowmap has a depth of 1 everywhere, which means the sun isn't seeing the landscape, which confuses me because it should be consistently black if that's the case. I'm wondering if it's a precision issue with my projection being so large
nostr:npub16sz45sngz7k7ha48c9gekuaxc6gntujtynsfukdx6807m6lv7z5sgw378f not yet, although I should do that
I’m willing to bet you’re right and it is the projection, but tbh I have no idea what these glm::ortho() values should be. Right now I’ve got:
glm::mat4 lightProjection = glm::ortho(-1000.0f, 1000.0f, -1000.0f, 1000.0f, 0.0f, 5000.0f);
which should give me a VERY big projection, but that seems necessary since the sun is far away
and
light_view = glm::lookAt(Sun::dir * 900.0f,
glm::vec3(0.0f,0.0f,0.0f),
glm::vec3(0.0f,1.0f,0.0f));
which should give me a view matrix roughly where the sun is currently located, looking in the direction of the center of the map.
do either of those look totally whack?
nostr:npub16sz45sngz7k7ha48c9gekuaxc6gntujtynsfukdx6807m6lv7z5sgw378f I'm coloring the shadows red and the results make NO sense to me. They're receding as the sun goes up but they're going the wrong way
filled with butthurt over these shadow maps

I don't want to say efficiently... but smoother late at night if it's a task I don't want to do. So in the mornings to afternoon I'm just doing tasks I want and then I'll come back and work from 8-2am on really terrible tasks. I think my morning brain is overstimulated and bounces all over the place trying to resist doing the unpleasant tasks but during the night it's just more relaxed.

I remember all night writing sessions in high school being the only reason I passed my college writing class. I'm grabbing some energy drinks later and completely wrecking my sleep schedule tonight
nostr:npub1806tnus5yhy3ltgqpp6ervpqp0n9ln59kt228e7ejt9k3etdr5qs7hdzue my productivity seems to cycle every 3-4 days. I'll hit a good stride and then run it straight into a brick wall
we're SO fucking close to getting this cola recipe down. I need to reduce the orange a bit and then it should be set. Unfortunately there are 3 separate ingredients which could be responsible for what I'm tasting:
- bitter curacao orange peel
- orange zest
- orange juice
Since the taste is slightly bitter I'm inclined to say its either the bitter orange peel or the zest (maybe too much of the pith is getting in due to my zesting technique). I'm going to start by halving the amount of bitter orange peel and see how that does
