Violinist and teacher, building a homestead on raw land in between lessons and concerts. Fascinated by how we can develop resilience in our lives, in our families, in our communities. I'm excited about freedom tech and circular economies, and am deeply grateful for the devs and advocates who are helping build tools for a better future.

Wait - hang on. You didn't lose ANY of your excess pounds? (or you just didn't lose all of them?)

Another vote for carnivore. One of the main reasons I'm trying it is because I love the benefits of fasting, and for many people fasting seems to be quite different on carnivore.

Political Games Advantage Psychopaths

——————————————————

I went to a talk recently by Arthur Brooks, who's a Harvard Business School professor who teaches about happiness. The talk itself was good in that it gave voice to the wisdom of the ancients. Faith, family, friends and work are the essential ingredients of happiness, according to him.

At the end of the talk, he gave us, the audience a challenge. His analysis was that the dark-triad personalities were responsible for creating much of the unhappiness we see and experience. These are the people with offensive personality traits that include narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy. His complaint was that too many of those people are now in control of institutions leading to a great deal of unnecessary and civilization-destroying strife.

I largely agreed that there's a small minority that causes a lot of the evil, but what I wanted to say and didn't get to say due to time constraints is that the current system incentivizes these types of people getting into positions of power. Hence, in my frustration at my not having had a chance to explain my reasoning, I write this essay.

Dark triad personality traits thrive in zero-sum games. Well let me qualify that. They thrive in zero-sum games where there are a lot of players, a lot being larger than Dunbar's number (~150). Under that number, it's hard to get away with dark-triad behavior because there's a collective moral intelligence at work. When in small-ish communities, dark triad traits are weeded out or at least marginalized. But beyond that number, most people know only a relatively small percentage of the people in the group and they instead have to back leaders based on limited information.

And this is where dark triad traits thrive. They are master manipulators and they can win these zero-sum games by doing the unethical. They generally give great first impressions, and only later are they found to be lacking empathy or morals. Sadly, society is currently full of large scale organizations where these dynamics are at play and you can see their operation in almost every institution. And that game has a name: politics, and nearly everything is infected with it.

Put simply, dark triad personalities have a massive advantage in political, zero-sum games and as such, they will be way over-represented in leadership positions. The largeness allows such people to get away with their immoral behavior and creates a lot of opportunities for them.

Sadly, nearly everything is large scale enough where dark triad traits win. Government, business, academia, media, education. It's pretty hard to come up with places where the dark triad traits *don't* have a massive advantage.

Yet there is one area of the economy and and it's small business entrepreneurialism. And no, I'm not talking about VC backed startups. The Silicon Valley VC world is a large institution where political maneuvering matters just as much as government or media and dark triad traits still have a massive advantage as witnessed by Elizabeth Holmes, Adam Neumann and Sam Bankman-Fried. When I say entrepreneurialism, I'm talking about normal small businesses like a deli or a car wash. There's much less politicking there and little room for dark triad personalities to take the reins. The environments are too small and there are not enough places to hide for people like that to win. Positive-sum games like market transactions, give no room for rent-seeking dark triad behaviors. Such behaviors don't work where value has to be provided specifically because of the immediacy of needing to make a profit.

Small businesses are what built civilization. It's only in the last 100 years or so with the advent of central banking that politics and zero-sum games have infected everything. So the question to ask isn't how do we stop these dark triad personalities from getting to the helm of these institutions. The correct question is how do we change the system so politics and zero-sum games are not so prevalent.

And this is where we need to talk about the economic system we are all under. It's way more Marxist than we'd like to believe. Marxism is what creates large political organizations where dark triad traits thrive. These are cancers to civilization and they're unfortunately growing in what were formerly thriving nations.

The 5th plank of the communist manifesto was the control of money by the government. The reason we have the system we have now that's getting closer to Marxism is because of the monetary system.

So to answer the professor's question, the economic system is the reason why dark triad personalities thrive. The permanent average reduction in happiness that he pointed out in 2008 and 2020, were argued to be the result of social media and corona lockdowns. I would argue that they were both massive inflationary events for the world economy. If you study hyperinflation, monetary debasement correlates strongly with unhappiness, probably because people don't like having their stuff taken away from them by inflation or otherwise. I would suggest that this is because monetary debasement adds a lot more zero-sum games giving huge advantages to dark-triad traits, which combined with the concentration/centralization of power which debasement also induces, makes everyone more miserable.

To fix the problem of evil people thriving, we must change the system so it doesn't produce such bloated, inefficient, zero-sum institutions that give evil people so many advantages.

Love this. Thank you!

Update on the below in case anyone is curious

I wrote to the customer service, and they were quite responsive. They confirmed that the two accounts I tried to start were deactivated as "abusive sign-ups" but didn't/couldn't tell me what had triggered that flagging.

hello!

I don't usually engage if I don't have anything relevant to add. Keep posting! we see you 😃

Summary: CPS takes child from mother after she sought a second opinion about his medical treatment; we can help by sending emails or donating here:

https://www.youarethepower.net/Sanders/

From Spike Cohen on Facebook:

This is Joslyn Sanders, with her newborn son Josiah Sanders.

Police and CPS stole Josiah from Joslyn, without a court order or any evidence of threat to his wellbeing, because she sought a second opinion about his medical treatment.

We're going to reunite them. Keep reading to find out how you can help.

Last March, Josiah had what appeared to be a mild seizure, so Joslyn took him to the ER, who found that Josiah had a mild calcium deficiency.

They went home, and in a subsequent follow-up with Josiah's primary care physician and Dallas Children's Hospital, his calcium showed improvement.

In October, Joslyn took Josiah to his primary care physician because he had developed a rash from a new laundry detergent. His doctor prescribed a topical steroid cream along with an antibiotic. During this visit, they also discussed referrals for nutritional therapy. In early December, Joslyn registered Josiah with Green Apple Therapy for Feeding Difficulties. He received an in-home food therapy evaluation on December 15.

By December 20, Josiah's rash had improved, but he was exhibiting some swelling. As a precaution, Joslyn brought Josiah back for another appointment with his primary care physician. It was determined that Josiah needed some blood work done, so he was sent to Dallas Children's Hospital.

Once they arrived, Josiah was examined and had blood work done. The doctor in charge of Josiah's care prescribed him Clindamycin. It's an antibiotic with a black box warning, the strongest warning that a medication can have. His lab results indicated that Josiah's infection was minimal and that he was not at risk of sepsis.

Based on that, Joslyn was not comfortable giving Josiah Clindamycin, which is typically reserved for severe infections. She decided to get a second opinion.

On December 21, after consulting with his primary doctor along with a pharmacist, Josiah was started on Bactrim, a milder antibiotic.

Later that day, Corinth Police officers, accompanied by Child Protection Services, arrived to do a wellness check on Josiah.

Police found no threat of danger, but CPS decided to take Josiah from his home anyway.

They did this without a court order.

Josiah was immediately hospitalized and placed on Clindamycin and a list of other medications without approval of his PCP, and Joslyn was blocked from having access to any of Josiah’s medical records.

A few days later, Joslyn had received a call from CPS stating that Josiah may be undergoing heart surgery, and that he had to have a PICC line placed for IV fluids and a nasogastric tube to keep him nourished because he was unwell and hungry.

This was the first time they allowed Joslyn to see him since he had been removed from her care.

The Sanders' next family visit, which was scheduled for the day after Christmas, was canceled by CPS.

Under the custody of CPS, Josiah’s health deteriorated and, by December 30th, when Joslyn was allowed to visit him again, the doctor reported that Josiah was no longer being treated for an infection.

Josiah, with a nasogastric tube in place, was suffering from a swollen stomach, running a fever, coughing, and vomiting - all known side effects of Clindamycin.

On February 19, Joslyn was able to attend a Medical Family Meeting with Dallas Children’s Hospital via Zoom where Josiah’s treating physician, nutritional therapist, and CPS workers were unable to answer questions about his condition.

They revealed that neither Josiah’s PCP nor his original nutritional therapist were contacted or consulted over the two months that he has been under CPS custody.

Josiah was supposed to come home the following day.

Joslyn has still received no communication from her CPS caseworker, and her inquiry as to his status and placement went unanswered.

CPS made it clear that only Joslyn would be allowed to see Josiah for one hour per week, under the supervision of multiple armed security officers.

Joslyn’s father, Jason, who is also her ADA companion and part of Josiah’s household, would not be allowed to see Josiah under any circumstances.

Although Joslyn provided a list of seven family and friends with whom to place Josiah, CPS initially claimed that no one on this list would take Josiah.

Later, they confirmed that they had called each person on the list, but had not bothered to leave a message with anyone in order to receive a return call.

Although the Sanders’ initial hearing should have taken place within 14 days of Josiah’s removal in December, their hearing has been repeatedly rescheduled for various "reasons".

One of the excuses was that the court was unable to serve Joslyn because they did not have her address.

The same address where CPS removed Josiah from her custody in December.

In their most recent court date yesterday, Josiah's pediatrician, Dr. Naidoo, confirmed that Joslyn was always diligent in her care of Josiah, and that he was never neglected by her.

Dr. Naidoo also said that Josiah's condition would have improved if Josiah hadn't been taken from Joslyn.

It was also revealed that the state's pediatrician, Dr. Dakil, was never informed by CPS that Joslyn had sought treatment for Josiah. Dr. Dakil was very surprised to find this out while being cross-examined yesterday.

Josiah is still, right now, being held by the state.

We're going to reunite them. Here's how you can help:

1. In the comments, I'm putting a link to a list of people to contact. We also have a template of wording you can use when you email them. Email all of them, and tell them to drop this case and let Josiah go home!

2. Share this post far and wide, and tag your friends, loved ones, favorite influencers, and anyone else that can help us get the word out in the comments.

With your help, we will get Joslyn and Josiah back together, and get this nightmare behind them, like we've done for so many others!

Here’s the link, but before you contact them, you know the drill: I'm as angry as you are, but we don't want to give these officials an excuse to play the victim. They'd love nothing more than to make it about them.

But it's not about them, and it’s not about what we think of them. It's about Joslyn and Josiah.

So be RESPECTFUL when you tell them to put an end to this nightmare for Josiah and his family, treat both of them with the basic human respect they deserve, and give Josiah back to Joslyn.

We've even put wording together that you can use when you email them.

Now then, here’s the link:

oh no!

I just wrote to everyone on that email list. I have a bit more faith in our ability to make state bureaucrats squirm under the spotlight so it's possible that if they get enough flak they'll resolve this case.

Will look later to see if I can find phone numbers of the Texas DFPS offices.

Thanks for posting this, Eryn.

Fingers crossed. I can't imagine being in this position as the mother.

and a way to do this without doxxing locations. Maybe sharing a SimpleX group for one general region? (I haven't tried SimpleX yet so I don't even know if this is possible)

I'm relatively new to the world of bitcoin. The philosophy and implications for freedom and human flourishing made sense to me almost immediately, but every time I think I understand a little bit more of the technical side I realize how much I still have to learn. Analogies help a lot (or would help) but I don't know if there are analogs in the physical world for some of this stuff.

Anyway - I'll keep following your questions and looking things up. I bet in a year we'll understand more than we do now.
