Framed #652 (no. It has a 'Toast of London' vibe. I'd watch it. I watched more Them which is good but the reason I like, some, but not all horror films is they are so absurd I can detach myself. The closer it gets to real life and historical events the more genuinely horrifying it is and it's a bit depressing. 'Them' is good and I'll continue watching because I don't think we should look away even if it makes a person uncomfortable, within reason. Some very odd 1970s horror film or obscure 1990s sci-fi don't have a tendency to make a person think in the same way. I've fully wrapped everything according to a formula as of two days ago and don't have to buy anything. The last minute cycle was broken. Which is great given COVID prevalence, I've had it twice, and first time I had a terrible sore throat/felt 5/10 grotty for about a week, and the second time lasted 4 days of feeling odd and tired. I didn't have a cough during the first time, I did immediately after I tested negative, or at all in the second. I had flu once, funnily enough about 3 weeks after the first bout of COVID (immune suppression?) - and I very much wouldn't like it again. Actual flu is terrible. Worries about COVID are a good proxy for hating Christmas shopping. I've done it early/online to save the olds and I thoroughly hate Christmas shopping. I quite like Christmas. There is something to the beginning of the end of winter and the nativity was drilled in from a very early age via schools**.)

Framed #651 (nah. I watched the first episode of Them. It was an uncomfortable watch because it was horrible. Essentially a young professional African American family from a very racist part of the southern states move to the genteel, not especially rich, but not at all poor, Compton in the 1950s, and are subjected to a more genteel but 'differently awful' racism with the potential for 'the ghost of racism past' on the form of a household haunting. There are examples of unconscious racism and biases, like when the father turns up for his first day at work and is rudely told by a receptionist that 'the kitchens are down there' without being asked his job title. So it's horrible watching, partly because they've chosen a family that is easy to empathise with and, mostly, because that kind of racism was full-blooded and existed. And to lesser extent, but an extent nonetheless, still does although it's probably morphed a lot and it's a different group of people. It'd be nice if the UK was excluded from that kind of racism but that'd be total bullshit, especially with regards to colonial attitudes within living memory although I think it's greatly reduced in popularity over the course of the 1990s, and is still occasionally there, and unconsciously*, and definitely there on the fringes. Although that would essentially be saying class prejudice is better than ridiculous racial categories. Maybe it is. Fuck knows. 'Them' is good and I'll watch more.)

Framed #650 (nah. I watched Horns. It had the moral complexity of a soap opera. And that's not to say there's anything wrong with soap operas, they're an admirable craft in themselves, but, I don't know, maybe I'm being unfair, if I watched the whole thing and had a visceral reaction against it, maybe it's good? No. It was the bastard hybrid of stereotypes*, moral stories for children, nostalgia and had the subtlty of a viral Facebook stories. Good actors, directing/cinematography was good, reasonable fight scenes, and Washington State. Everything else can go meff itself. If you liked it that's cool by me. I quite like Gorgonzola, Roquefort, Stilton, รpoisses, very hot chilli and tonic water (not the horrible artificially sweetened stuff, or in the same mouthful, together, like a kind of cheesy tonic water mash). People viscerally dislike them and they're quite right.)

Framed #649 (nah. I got some things wrapped. 4 to be precise and I made a mistake on the formula I used but there wasn't a great deal of wastage. I'm going to dick about with the formula next wrapping session. It's not very pretty and I am cutting and wrapping on the floor. I watched Barbarian, 2022, a horror film. I'm not going to give away any of the plot other than to say that as a person who often infers or deduces the plot reasonably quickly, particularly within the framework of tropes, it made a pleasant change. The direction, cinematography and acting were all excellent. A screenplay in the literal sense. I made and ate - I nearly typed ate and made - rather I cooked and then ate risotto. Once a person works out the ratio of rice to stock is 1:3 (I used 1:3.25 because I wanted a creamier risotto) and the stock should be added hot, kept close to boiling, ladle by ladle, it's pretty simple. It was pea and asparagus risotto. Garlic, onion, a glass of Lidl's then cheapest dry white wine, stock cubes, butter, seasoning, and parmigiano reggiano were involved. Normally I get a stock pot going an hour or so before where I chuck any viable kitchen vegetable scraps & nearly gone vegetables in the stock (old, but not mouldy, vegetables from the fridge), but tastewise it was fine. Nutritionally worse than my stock cube/old vegetable stock hybrid though. I won't type out the recipe because there are lots of recipes - but the ratio, hot stock (I keep it in a separate pan on the heat next to the pot I'm cooking risotto in), not stirring too much, and ladling when previous ladle of stock is nearly gone* are the most important bits.)

Framed #648 (nah. I still haven't wrapped. I watched three episodes of series 2 of Spidey & Friends and one episode of Dip Dap. I was uncle-ing via childcare because winter bugs. He built bridges, towers, played with Lego and we played Guess Who? and Rhino Hero. He's 4.7 so rules were overlooked and/or modified because both would have been difficult to play otherwise. Rhino Hero is a very good game and the ability to stitch up the next player is a little like Exploding Kittens for the under 8s because it doesn't require reading. Although I have found most games/attention spans, require some adult input and being too strict about it is counterproductive. In Rhino Hero there are wall cards - like playing cards bent in the middle and roof cards - roof pattern printed playing cards with positions for where the next wall cards should go. It comes with a little wooden figure of Rhino Hero, whom is brave as a lion, smart as a fox and heavy as a rhinoceros. Players get a number of cards each and take turns building a tower with wall cards and roof cards. Some of the roof cards have a picture of Rhino Hero and you have to delicately place Rhino Hero there without bringing down the tower. Whoever gets rid of their cards first wins. The cards have a couple of other symbols like 'skip a go', 'go the other way around the table', 'use two roof tiles', 'draw another card' and they're symbols not words. I ignored most of that and we just drew cards and played until we had a big tower. In a year or two he'll be fine playing it properly. His reading is also improving in fits and starts so maybe Exploding Kittens also. Like Exploding Kittens, Rhino Hero is just as good for adults. A handy small box too. Dip Dap is great. Spidey & Friends is like something from Vought International. At some point I will legit be able to watch episodes of Adventure Time again.)

Framed #647 (nah. I watched Hannah Fry's The Secret Genius of Modern Life** which despite having a basic understanding of some aspects of the episode, about cellphones, had bits in there regarding the history I wasn't that familiar with, and did so in an unpretentious, approachable way that it competently explained the basics of 'what things are' to a diverse audience. There is only so much that can be touched upon and depth is necessarily limited by time but I think the best documentaries, regardless of depth or target audiences, don't send viewers in the wrong directions - in other words they're good places to start. It was a good documentary. I'm basically in a hurry, didn't end up wrapping anything, and got repeatedly distracted. I think I distracted myself by not removing myself from distractions and I take responsibility for that. Good toast though. Probably.)

Framed #646 (it really depends on the country. Nah. SDR are probably rainbow coloured if they were ever to be physically embodied. Usual Saturday. I watched Rick and Morty, the view one with the Pokรฉmon Poke Ball, and it was on form as any Rick and Morty ever. Today I feel dumb and want to start Christmas wrapping because the tradition of leaving it to the last minute, specifically the inevitably of doing so, bothers me and I want to break the cycle. I have a 10m roll of plain Clairefontaine recyled craft paper, which is what I normally wrap gifts in (for the last ~6 years) because if a person shops around it's cheap, and good paper, and I think what's inside matters as much. For me the principle value of gifts is defined by how smart or useful they are not how much they're worth in money terms. Obviously a Fabergรฉ Egg or Bargain Hunt fleece* could be converted into cash and spent on more important things, so that opinion is tempered somewhat by reality. Or a host of other useful expensive things, but they can be divided into degrees of usefulness, like the literal embodiment of gifts. I'm a cheap wrapper but, maybe, a thoughtful gifter.)

Framed #644 (nah. I read another chapter of The Perfect Golden Circle. Books that I'm enjoying I usually read quite slowly in chapter chunks. Partly, I suspect, that as a person gets older the demands on their attention increase, and enjoying a good book slowly is better than reading a book quickly. If it were nonfiction I'd have finished it by now and I'd be Googling notes and thinking about whether to get anything it referenced. If that interesting. The book references a weird point in British cultural history, in 1989, just prior to more than 4 television channels in the form of satellite TV and very much prior to mass adoption of anything resembling today's internet, and the idea in the air that there could, or should, be something different culturally. Decadal thinking, inasmuch as time is mentally divided into discrete chunks, is chopping continuous gradients into chunks because we are born, live and die, if there were an immortal observer they'd probably say stuff is slowly, and occasionally quickly, changing, always, and we cut it up into chunks because it's easier to examine a snowball rolling at the same speed. Everything that applies to 1989 in terms of the ratio of important changes probably applies going forwards and backwards in decades. I wonder if we regards years with 4 at the end as inevitable and 5 as the middle because we count in 10s. Maybe we should think of time hexadecimally or in binary to better align ourselves with GPGPU farms*.)

Framed #643 (nah. I watched A Quiet Place and started reading The Perfect Golden Circle by Benjamin Myers. A Quiet Place was good in all kinds of ways, direction, acting, cinematography, but, maybe I'm been a bit unfair, I think unless the invasion happened very quickly, and everywhere, there'd probably be an antipodean electronics engineer (maybe who runs a YouTube channel), or working in a lab somewhere, declared king of the world because they tried the obvious electronically. And the microphone at the end in the best case wouldn't have picked up much over 20kHz (and may have a low pass and/or high pass filter) and PA systems have a frequency response curve that drop off rapidly at around 20kHz assuming the best possible case - worst case the horn type, all weather speakers, probably drop off at around the upper end of speech at 7kHz. In other words the alien zapping sounds couldn't have been ultrasonic or harmonically complicated beyond the specifications of the attack platform. As someone who has repeatedly put fractal patterns in music, viewable with spectral frequency displays, I accept there could be a weird audio formula or resonant frequency thing. The creatures did respond to the vocal range. Good film, but consult more scientists and engineers, otherwise it's a bit 'a wizard did it'. The TV version of The Gallows Pole was arse, which is unrelated to audio stuff, Benjamin Myers is a good author.)

Framed #642 (nah. I watched Don't Breath. A 2016 horror film about a gang of young catburglars whom break into a house owned by a blind, somewhat old, former soldier and suffer greatly. It was a good film that managed to build tension and I hadn't worked out most of the plot details in advance. Which is why I'd rather not go into it further other than to say it's also quite graphically violent and there's a very silly, or good for prompting the reaction, line where Norman, the bad guy, says "anything's possible when you don't believe in a god" and I thought: Buddhists don't and there's a long history of secular morality and I seem to remember the good Samaritan in the new testament at school where the implication, I think, was that a good neighbour isn't defined by their faith or ethnicity. If the fear of eternal damnation is the only thing between doing right and wrong it strikes me that there is a great deal of leeway categorising right and wrong which differs from secular morality primarily in belief in a god or afterlife, or particular creed, rather than a wholly different right or wrong. QED: A dick's a dick and dickheads are dickheads. I've got to get out of this Slough of Dispond and make some toast.)

Framed #641 (nah. I watched Infinity Chamber which was good but I mostly guessed the plot by half way through and I've read and watched a lot of science fiction so, a little like the Rick & Morty episodes affectionately mocking sci-fi tropes, it was world within a world/automated prison number 1/x. I watched the whole thing because the acting a directing was good. For someone who hasn't been watching and reading sci-fi for decades it is probably a good film. I should have read a book. And this morning I am racing the clock because I didn't set my alarm.)

Framed #640 (no. Watched a documentary called "Bad Host: Hunting the Couch Surfing Predator" which was sad, harrowing, and kind of indicative of a kind of blind optimism that exists independently of technology, like attitudes towards hitchhiking in the 1960s/1970s, but is often made apparent by it. In the same way that minority of croudfunders consciously grift a minority of people offering couch surfing are, at best, creeps. In that case the perpetrator went much further. Technology enabled him, but I'm sceptical he wouldn't have found a way to be a predator without technology. Which is the central issue with technology: does it cause categories of crime (and social ills) or does it illuminate them? Is it an "after/with this therefore because of this" fallacy? Would there been even less of a chance of catching him before the technology that enabled him? Clearly the companies involved could have and should have done more, but ultimately the blame lies with the perpetrator. There is also a battle between optimism versus pessimism, and either as a binary position is difficult to logically rectify but reassuringly simplistic. See also cryptocurrencies and money.)
