I've never tried i3wm. I should. I didn't realize it was licensed with BSD licenses, which I like.

If I do try it, I'll check out your configs and scripts.

I'm using the #moStard nostr web app: https://mostard.org

I can set a receiving address and people can send me tips. I don't think there's notifications and you probably can't see who sends you a monero tip (privacy coin, after all).

Looks like you have a monero address set up, but it begins with a 5 so probably not a valid Monero mainnet address.

Got some ThinkPad laptops in that I am refurbishing. ThinkPad T490 and T14 (2nd Generation) models.

I like the 14 inch size. I plan on working with the T495 and T14 with AMD Ryzen processors more soon. For now, most of the ThinkPad laptops I sell come with Intel processors.

So I got the opportunity for reasons I'd rather not rehash to test out some DEs on EndeavorOS today. I've been building my own environment for a long time and haven't tried any of them out in years, some in over a decade. My opinion on them all was basically outdated, I figured I'd write a little review on them for you guys looking to hop into Linux as a desktop or having just started.

First I'll start with the biggest disappointment: KDE Plasma. It sounds good on paper: polished, light on resources, modern, Wayland native. But the damn thing wouldnt stop getting in my way. Kwallet? File extension enforcement on a Unix compliant system? Commonly used buttons hidden by default. Kludgy animations. Just all round insane defaults, making choices for the user that a sane user would never choose, the thing wants you to operate KDE and not your machine. I will never recommend KDE again.

Tried MATE. Just as good as GNOME 2 back in the day, which is a double edged sword. It's just missing a bunch of more modern stuff that makes life easier. No text search in the applications menu. No icon only window panel view. A few little bugs I don't remember in it the last time I tried it. And it was fucking huge compared to every other one I tried, and ate the most RAM.

Tried Budgie. Never tried that one before. It was cool. Light, intuitive, there were a couple of quirks, such as needing to right click on "tray" utilities to get to menus. If you like it you like it. I found it's animations made it feel more viscous to use.

Then I tried Cinnamon. I hadn't used it since the year it came out, I tried it out and switched to MATE, it just didn't seem very good. Boy has that changed. It is by far the best DE I have used, ever. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that the warning and prompt dialogs are a little jarring, the whole screen dims, very attention grabbing and focus breaking. But otherwise a very, very fluid experience, lightweight, snappy, sane defaults and customization options, as of right now I've got nothing else bad to say about it.

Before today the only one I still really liked was XFCE, but I stopped liking it because it is heavier than KDE (!) and every dozen updates or so it is certain to break something. Maybe that's changed too. I don't have the time to try it again.

I stopped using DEs a few years ago when I decided to take the dive into wayland and tiling and all that, and I'd never go back for my own environment, but for people used to a mouse and are used to windows and just want to install something and start using it, I've got to recommend something. That something is no longer KDE. It is going to be Cinnamon, from now until a decade later when I try stuff out again.

I recommend Cinnamon, too. Most of the Linux computers I sell have Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) installed with Cinnamon as the DE.

My main workstation has Devuan with Cinnamon.

I dabble with tiling window managers and other more minimal WMs, so I have CWM on my laptop right now.

You likely already follow me, but I boosted your post.

I refurbish computers and sell them, sell computer with Linux pre-installed. Also do repair and upgrades (mostly in my local area).

Also custom built computers.

Not exactly a producer... but certainly add value and keep things working longer.

Looks interesting. I'll check it out.

I heard you mention it in the interview with Doug.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Just got LocalSend on the old phone with F-Droid. Will see how well it works soon.

#LocalSend

I am testing out LocalSend to quickly send files between devices on my local network.

Installed with the .deb package on my Devuan workstation. Will try to install LocalSend on an older phone that has /e/ OS (privacy version of Android). Then will test sending photos I take on the phone to my workstation.

I'm updating the software on an older Acer netbook at the request of a customer. He was getting the message about the installed version of Firefox no longer being supported. Laptop is running Zorin OS (Linux).

I updated the system using "apt update" and "apt-distupgrade" as you normally would on a Debian based system. Started Firefox again. Still on an older version, but the version screen mentions Flatpak. So looks like Firefox is installed as a Flatpak on Zorin OS.

So running "flatpak update" now. I'm not a flatpak kind of guy, so had to refresh my memory by looking at the man page for flatpak.

I've put more listings of processors for sale on XMRbazaar. I am selling CPUs at prices similar or less than what they are selling for on ebay.

https://xmrbazaar.com/user/RetroEdgeTech/

Listed for Monero, but if you see something you like that I have listed, I do accept other forms of payment, such as Bitcoin Cash (BCH). Just message me.

I'm replacing a gunked up water cooler AIO radiator with a more reliable air cooler. I am really liking the Arctic Freezer 36 air cooler. Does a good job and is easy to understand how to install it.

This one will be cooling an AMD Ryzen 5800X processor.
