The sale will give BlackRock’s “Global Infrastructure Partners” and other U.S-based companies a 90% stake in the Panama Ports Company, which operates the key ports of Balboa and Cristobal on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the Panama Canal. Additionally, BlackRock will gain control over 80% of CK Hutchison’s other interests across the world, consisting of 43 ports comprising 199 berths in 23 countries, while Hutchison will maintain control over its Hong Kong and Chinese interests.

In response to the 25% trade tariffs imposed today by Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated:

"Today, the United States has launched a trade war against Canada—its closest partner and ally, its closest friend. Canadians are reasonable, but we will not back down from a fight. Not when our country is at stake."

In another statement, Trudeau noted that earlier this year, less than 1% of fentanyl—one of the deadliest drugs today—entered the U.S. through Canada. He added that after strict border enforcement in March, that number dropped even further, making Trump’s tariffs unfair in his view.

In response, Canada imposed 25% tariffs on certain American products. Mexico and China, also affected by the new tariffs, announced they would do the same.
