It really did become more enjoyable once I decided it was okay to comment on notes. You might get ignored or you might have great conversation. I try to only use relevant hashtags and depending on the time of day you may get more or less engagement.

Agreed, for me the zaps are a bonus and I get excited when my notes get zapped, but I enjoy the back and forth banter with people too. It really is a social thing for me and it works great. π«π
Engage, tag, engage, follow the tags of the things you want to see, and engage. I have tons of fun and I ignore the things I'm not interested in. I see lots of art and food mixed in with the bitcoin stuff. My biggest fear was commenting on notes in the beginning, but once I got over that it's been great. If you just lurk, you're not going to get the experience you want.
The trick is to asshole first. Defensive assholing, like defensive driving.
Hashtag the heck out of it...with relevant tags...don't spam the grownostr or plebchain tags. Then follow the tags of things you want to see.
