Sure frphank. It does not have to be a thriving profit making economy. But the money has to come from somewhere.

And it should not be:

1. Developers working their asses off for free to "contribute" to the freedom of speech. This will definitely lead to death of Nostr.

2. It should not depend on social pressure to zap developers. Zaps are optional and will always be. Think about the musician with a hat near the town square. When you stand there and listen to his tune you most likely tip him because he is right there. But whether you zap or not will not matter as you can simply scroll past.

3. It should not be begging for donations from large institutions or billionaires because that will surely lead to misaligned incentives as the developers will work harder to fulfill demands of a small set of people who already have freedom because they are rich.

Right now, there is no business model for Nostr. It is not stupid to discuss potential solutions and set some standards for the success of a self sustaining social media that is truly open.

Is a nostr business really a business? We're too early at this stage to have a "nostr economy" with competing businesses. The hospitality economy out there is pretty mature so if your restaurant fails well duh market forces.

But building nostr is a community effort at this point that has commercial aspects to it that you should consider subscribing to just so the whole ecosystem will still be around 6 months from now.

We're the Jamestown that could become the U.S. of A. Think about it.

The fact is that the major benefit of the service you work so hard on is… free. The inability for me to select the 69k sat tier limits my choice to remain a paying member. The benefits of the higher paying tiers are negligible.

You’re working hard adding new services like AI prompting, when users specifically asked for simple changes like lower storage amounts and more flexible pricing structures, and the ability to choose a lower cost tier.

Developers always choose to work on the exciting fun things they want to add, instead of listening to the users requests.

I’m a paying customer of nostr as well.

The issue is that you’re upset people aren’t paying for a valuable service. I’m just trying to convey some options to find the tipping point to encourage the free market to find value in a product and pay for it.

For new subscribers, the free and paid versions are too similar of a service to encourage subscription.

For existing subscribers most of whom are “donate to developers” types, the upgrade page is too limiting, and sats pricing being more than last year is jarring, when bitcoin is considered deflationary. Suggestions have been made and relayed. But users/subscribers will make their own choice on if they find the value or not.

I have a bone to grind with you, Nostr. I’ve been slaving away trying to build a completely new ecosystem for a media hosting, and we’ve been charging bare minimum to keep the service afloat while providing a human-to-human/dog support, and yet people complain how “outrageous” the pricing is. If the price cannot afford even a cup of coffee after costs, it is not outrageous in my book. Creators love to complain how they get nothing for their work, while many devs are literally giving away their time, knowledge and investment into the craft of tech. Also, your fucking bullshit about 1 sat = 1 sat, while closely monitoring fiat rates, is getting old and tiresome. At least be honest with yourself, and stop placating bullshit. I am not your slave, I am not your daddy, if you need a good service that is free from ads and other bullshit, then someone has to pay. If you do not want to pay, do it yourself or go to YouTube or TikTok or Instagram, and stop pretending like you give a fuck.

I forgot who said this - some guru maybe sadhguru - but they basically said -in response to a question asking if they where afraid of technology and the power it gives man - the guru in response said that our humanity will one day surpass our technology.

One day in the future technology will be so advanced that a single human could end humanity with a thought. When we get there humans better have a social network strong enough to not allow that to happen. The network of course will all be grass roots voluntary and organic otherwise it becomes tyrannical or something similar. This imo is the future of nostr or nostr like social protocols. Nostr empowers the individual and the collective simultaneously. It's the only way.
