It's all about best fit resolution of your unit of measure.

Residential construction, for one. Centimeters are too course for most construction projects, meanwhile individual millimeters meaningless for the same application. Getting down to about 1/8 of an inch is generally the right precision for the job.

While metric is at best a base 10 logarithm, imperial is base 2, giving us much more optionality in the unit resolution....
