Its been at least 7 years since the US had an election, and over 50 years before that.
I had a theory a few years ago on stacker.news, before nostr zaps, that tipping notes would be a behavior modifier of a social media. It would cause people to behave, improve good will and cause trolls to lose interest. That tipping would eliminate the need for moderation accept in the simple-to-detect corner cases of automated spammers and DDoS'ers. So far that is how nostr is shaping up, and zapathons are part of that community edification.

Otherwise, yes, zaps should just use nuts and not lightning.
What is the problem with custodial mints when NWC is for custodial lightning services?
Right now there are only three options for lnaddress (for recieving zaps) wallets that also support NWC (for sending zaps).
There are also some web clients that have integrated lightning wallets that avoids the need for NWC.

Profiles could indicate (with a boolean or enum) whether they prefer nuts (dm nuts) or zaps (lnaddress) for nostr clients that support nuts.
Alby only stores your nostr private key in your computer's local storage, I believe. You can create a new identity in amethyst under the "accounts" settings option.
