I find myself way more motivated than when I use traditional social media 😉
A little quick research this morning about 1941 Play Ball baseball cards.
Here’s an uncut paper sheet that Christie’s offered in October 1993.
Cardboard was becoming a critical commodity at the time, hence the paper stock.

Today, on the blog is a piece about the original artwork used for Willie Mays' 1953 Topps baseball card: https://www.postwarcards.com/1953-topps-244-willie-mays-original-artwork/
If you didn't know, the original full-color paintings of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Bob Feller, Jackie Robinson, and Roy Campanella’s 1953 Topps baseball cards were first made available to the hobby in Guernsey’s Topps Auction in 1989.
The Mays art sold for $80k (+10% buyer's premium, of course).

Good night fine people of #Nostr
Here's one last Trader Speaks piece today (from April 1981). This one's about 1968 Bazooka panels“ Why did I choose to share it? He mentions that the set was called "Tipps from the Topps," and Topps released a booklet with all 15 panels, so it's Hobby Library related!

I'm basically spending the afternoon of my three-day weekend flipping through and scanning vintage hobby publications. The last was the October 1979 issue of The Trader Speaks.
It's hard to pick just one highlight from this one amongst a lot of high signal content like pre-war wax wrapper identification, HOF plaque postcard research, 1969 Topps "Peeloffs," and Plow Boy Tobacco Premiums, but I think I'll go with the ad from Mike Egnor selling a 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig card for $40. It was a fair price then, but now it's worth USD 9-10k.

Standout advertisement from the May 1980 issue of The Trader Speaks features an unopened box of 1968 Topps baseball for under $100. With The Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator, that's like $380 today (at least, let's be honest). But MHCC sold one for $95k in April 2021...it would be a lot more today.

Just made an update to my post about 1957-58 Topps Basketball Wax Packs: https://www.postwarcards.com/1957-58-topps-basketball-wax-packs/
A collector reached out after reading this post and told me he and some friends bought the Mastro lot of 6 packs (August 2004) for ~$25k; they split four and sold two. Two of the guys he split them with sold theirs years ago. Another guy kept his GAI 7.5 and crossed it to a PSA 6 pack years ago, and he still owns one of the GAI 8 packs.
One of these packs would run you about 1.6 #Bitcoin these days.

I ran across the following pair of advertisements for card shows in the February 1983 issue of The Trader Speaks, so I asked folks on X (I know, I know, I need to work on migrating them all to #Nostr) which they would most want to travel back to 1983 to attend.
Folks preferred the JFK show at a ratio of 7:4, I would have gone with the Whippany, NJ show to see Erskine & Piersall.

Tiffany did have more limited printings. Plus a lot of folks who were 80s kids are now adults with coin :)
Can you smell the junk wax through #Nostr ?

I found this 1938 sell sheet advertising the Canadian counterpart of the U.S. Gum, Incorporated 1938 Horrors of War set in a 2004 auction catalog.
In the lower-left corner, you can see a call out to the May 9th, 1938 issue of Life Magazine that highlighted the set, which I managed to grab a copy of off eBay for just a few dollars.
Time to document the connection, with a few photos, for the blog!

Today’s blog post is about the R326 Goudey Flip Movies Set: https://www.postwarcards.com/the-r326-goudey-flip-movies-set/
Sotheby's offered a set of 26 (plus the 2 DiMaggio variations) R326 Goudey Flip Movies booklets in its April 1994 auction, with an expected price of $3.5k—$4k; an aggressive ask since Tom Reid found a bunch of these in the late 80s, though this was the nicest copy.

Good night people of #Nostr
Thanks for all the motivation today!
I don’t have super strong feelings about it. Meh, probably not. I’d include Rose first…it’s complicated…
Got Deckle?
1969 Topps Deckle Edge is the most condition-sensitive insert set ever made. PSA has graded 10,944 cards - ZERO Gem Mint 10s.
