I find myself way more motivated than when I use traditional social media 😉

Slow, usually shows zero or one zap/like on a post unless I tap on it.
When a response shows up in my news feed, it often takes a while for the OP to load.
Can’t get my friends to join, the best social media is the one all your friends are on.

Not such a big one but you can't unzap in case you didn't want to press it
A zap delay option would help with this I think. Kind of like having the ability to "unlike" something if you accidentally do. It could be a misleading social signal if you accidentally zap something you disagree with (like a racist post, etc).

- sometimes when switching clients your (relay)settings mess up or your follow and following list messes up
Compared to 1 year ago so many stuff already improved so much. #nostr is moving extremely fast and I’m patient. So much potential here.

Images take a long time to load, sometimes not at all. Other little things but not deal breakers
All android clients has bad choice for colors and fonts. It's much more pleasent to read text on X/Twitter than on any nostr client.
Images and videos slow to load at times. Still have to exit out to find gifs. Can’t get NWC to work in Damus (gave up).
Other than that it’s been great!
problem number one is absolutely the high bandwith usage, a lot of people in the world dont have unlimited plans to see your shitposting and come here to reply

I disagree. Users should have some way of signaling that they no longer support a particular note for whatever reason. It's unfair to have no way of removing a note or adding updated context to it.
Some clients already provide this option, such as nostr:npub142gywvjkq0dv6nupggyn2euhx4nduwc7yz5f24ah9rpmunr2s39se3xrj0 editing feature.

Yup. You can also request deletion but not all relays support it.
Well, that's cool. I think most people probably mean that they want this implemented somehow at the protocol level where relays have to respect it if they want to get notes from a particular user. I imagine something like a setting that let's me not transmit to relays that haven't adopted the enforcement mechanism
I could manually choose relays, but that isn't real enforcement.
Replying to a previous posted note with clarification is a way of adding context. I enjoy screen captures of posts that big shots put out on x and later deleted. Shows the character of the people influencing others. Your notes can be saved by anyone with or without the memory hole button.

Yeah, that sounds great until you realize that your reply is lost in the replies and doesn't really add context for that reason. This has already been written about by nostr:npub1wmr34t36fy03m8hvgl96zl3znndyzyaqhwmwdtshwmtkg03fetaqhjg240 and he makes better points.

When I follow people, the follows don’t stick unless I reset the network setting?

I don't think this is exactly what you're asking for, but I will say it anyway.
Mostly, being told to fuck off in various ways when I point out a bug, practice, or UX design choice I think is bad from a user perspective. I've mostly given up. If it gets bad enough, I just won't use any of it. That's where I'm at as a highly ideological and technical user (tester). Average people aren't going to deal with the things people like me do, and even I'm hanging by a thread at this point. Just being honest. People can take it or leave it.
One specific example would be annoying bugs in the text editors in both Primal and Amethyst (which I've made known). The issues still exist (using multiple keyboards and devices), yet more features continue to be added. It's hard to get excited when such basic features aren't complete. One dev told me to just use a specific keyboard. Cool, but that is a workaround, not a real solution. I haven't had problems with any other apps, and installing some random keyboard for Nostr clients is not going to cut it if we want this to be widely adopted.
I've had similar issues with connecting wallets. I never figured out how to get Mutiny to actually connect after clicking the button in Primal. I've had lots of little issues that I feel should be fixed before all the other stuff is added on top.
A feature should be complete if it's going to get pushed to users. I used to use Amethyst and expressed concern regarding pushing the draft feature before anyone could turn it off and not telling users that their unshared thoughts were actually being shared and broadcasted. Adding the option to disable in the future doesn't negate the violation that some of us felt. Ignored. So I fucked off.
It's just getting exhausting. I don't get paid for testing this stuff and actually send sats to developers. I'm okay with that! But I'm not okay with being treated less than simply because I haven't contributed some arbitrary amount of code to some project. I'm just wondering who this stuff is being built for, because from a user/tester perspective, I'm left feeling like a house is being built around me on a half-finished foundation most of the time when I try this stuff out.
Any opinion is usually met with "what are you building?" or something similar. I can just shut the fuck up, say thanks, and eventually stop using this stuff and funding devs (to the best of my ability - I'm not pretending to be an important VC here), but who benefits from that?
These are my main problems.

-every dev is like this
-that I've tried everything being built
-that I'm perfect. I'm far from it
I AM grateful for everyone's contributions, but that doesn't mean that opinions on the thing are personal attacks.
And we testers could use a more centralized document or something expressing how devs in general want to be interacted with (suggestions, feedback, bug reports, etc). It's all so chaotic from my perspective. If they don't want testers, then say that.
Please report issues uncovered to the appropriate projects git repository for tracking. This is how you ensure your thoughts arent lost in the void, fall between the cracks etc and can be triaged.
Most dev teams for nostr projects are 1 person. The primary customer is that dev, but every project welcomes others to use and provide feedback.
Actually found an interesting one the other day. Relays weren’t overwriting list events that should have been considered as parameterised replaceable (addressable), for the same d-tag.
search: coracle search returns no results when searching for a word I remember seeing in a note.
follow list: the best experience is mass follow everyone, then curate from there. This is not easy to do and then your follow list dumps occasionally.
login: the browser extension npub/nsec experience has been dismal. I think most people will just do the bad thing and enter their nsec into the site. this is the onboarding and expansion of nostr, the nostr login! if it catches on and websites start to see the benefit of gaining thousands of users by just incorporating a nostr login its a win for privacy and nostr ecosystem. But its not ready for prime time.
Ux for pics and videos decreases the amount of content I post. Amethyst should be able to take the Pic or video in app. Editing would be nice but not a definite need, however compression like you-cut does would be clutch so I can cut a video down to a set size before upload.
Tangentially, knowing upload limits, eg paid upload on one site may be limited if using another sites free teir.

I posted about a LinkedIn style client. Similar to Fountain in that it could only show posts related to careers / professional content. They already understand the social graph / web of trust concept. We need normie clone clients to onboard I think
I had this experience on Amethyst but not Primal. The amount of trash I saw on Amethyst, even without global, was maddening.

To be more specific since I phrased poorly and most are misunderstanding my intent:
If you have a raw global feed you get vile insane shit like borderline CSAM, animal torture, etc; stuff that I would bet 99.9999% of people all do not want to see. Unless you are a super freedom oriented person with at least rough knowledge of how nostr works, if that’s the very first thing you see I understand why nostr seems unappealing.
To be specific: I do not see being an echo chamber as an issue at all. That’s just the initial crowd the platform most appeals too.
Luckily I think most people onboard to Primal, learn and then try other clients, and thus don’t have this problem, but it does happen on some other clients.
I had the same terrible onboarding experience, with the old Coracle. Fixed it by switching to Amethyst.

No organic reach, if you are not already popular, it feels like your notes are going straight to /dev/null
Sometimes, that's exactly what I want.
Follow people you are interested in, reply to their notes, occasionally post your own original stuff--your reach is what you make it, not what the "algorithm" does.
This all day.
I get that and I am sure it is better than having the almighty algorithm deciding what and who to promote. However what I don't like about this approach is that it feels like going door to door throwing your opinion on everything just to try to "promote" yourself in a way. There must be a better way. Maybe there is, I haven't explored all of the possibilities of Nostr but some kind of Explore feed would be nice for new accounts, especially if it is served by paid relays to reduce the spam.

I was interacting with well known npubs within a week of being on Nostr. It's all about what you put into it. There is no algorithm to feed you content that the big wigs want you to see.
I'm not popular but gosh I have a lot of fun here. It took a while to get to that point, though.
Your reach is about as organic as it gets. Meeting people, getting involved, and getting people involved requires participation. I know that sentence sounds redundant but it really is that simple. 😊
I suggest engaging with the peeps on a regular basis and being consistent when posting on nostr. I got here a little over a year ago and it was really confusing at first but after a while you start to find your group. I suggest exploring the other stuff especially chat rooms, corny chat, nests, hive talk. Im not sure how long you've been here, but it takes time to make new friends.
And also, the people that built this thing and are in the industry are front and center because they built this thing and they are in. the industry, or hang around those circles. Try going to meetups, best way to meet these talented individuals.

You appear to have posted 13 notes and replied to around 18 posts and you appear to have around 12 followers.
I use the word appear here, because this is what your profile on Primal reports after examining the relay stats, which may or may not be accurate. This strange phenomenon is a feature and a benefit.
For me, that seems about right.
Here’s the reasons:
There’s no algorithm and no advertising here. Most of the bots are providing services like interfaces to ChatGPT nostr:npub1tsgw6pncspg4d5u778hk63s3pls70evs4czfsmx0fzap9xwt203qtkhtk4 or giving real time Bitcoin stats nostr:npub1030jfcwftah37a242jv0qqvmuyje5ew8tt59rs3477c4e8ugurhqzdwcta .
If an influencer shows up, they start from scratch, just like anybody else. There are a few who have accelerated their follower count by being automatically added to new users “following” by clients.

But apart from that, we are all equal and we start at the same place.
You will never be fed content you didn't ask for, the things you post may never be seen even by people that follow you (if they are not active at the same time) and you will earn the followers you attain because they are interested in what you have to say.
This is a different approach and one we mostly appreciate.
Give it some time, you might find a different way is a better way. If you don't, don't worry, all social platforms and even this social "protocol" are optional.
Go and touch grass in the mean time, that is real life and far better than any social network OR protocol.

I'm posting as a way of screaming into the void. Kinda defeats the purpose if it isn't a void.
On twitter I had like 200 "followers" (read 3 humans) and never got interactions.
On nostr I first followed the people I was following on twitter (roughly, say 10-30?), and then interacted with a few posts, liking and following and occasionally zapping.
Already have more reactions than on twitter. (I know, "X")
Same case for me, but the reason for that is probably the fact that the amount of people here is orders of magnitude less, which makes your replies more likely to be seen/interacted with. I get that. But if Nostr is destined to scale to tens/hundreds of millions of people, it will be harder and harder for small accounts to even get any interactions and the incentive for them to stay wouldn't be here, the whole comment section will be filled with people begging to be noticed and the content would suck. If that is the case it will either implode because people would give up on trying to share their thoughts or it will become just a message board where popular accounts are interacting with each other and everyone else will be nothing but a content consumer.
Good point with the "drowning in the sea" for bigger overall user numbers.
I still think that - just as with now in the bitcoin subculture - there will be genres and groups that may be very interactive.
But I think people will either need to learn to find these betters (search, hashtags etc).
Or some opt in algos based on interest need to be developed in the future, I think.
Yeah, I might be wrong but at some point there will be a need for having an algorithm for some specific optional feeds, e.g. "Explore" as long as it is completely open source. I know the current paradigm is smart client/dumb server, but maybe some "smart" relays serving you notes after some some algorithmic (again, open sourced) processing could be useful, after all you are either interested in reading from them or not.

In order to access /var/tmp you need to start aiming for interesting conversations instead of marketing metrics. Interact instead of throwing statements, send love & wisdom and the system will reward you.

They are. Try replying to or quoting other people's stuff, so that you appear in their notifications and they feel motivated to respond. Some of them will eventually click on your profile and maybe even follow you back or boost one of your notes.

you can use DVMs. they're available in Amethyst or on the web with noStrudel or Coracle just to name a few options.

Not enough diverse content, not enough content creators, hard to browse and discover stuff.
This is 100% on the user. You have to follow folks and hashtags and actually interact to really get the most out of it. No one will serve content to you.
Which mobile client do you use to “follow hashtags” ?
Otherwise, I’m doing all of the above, but there’s just too little diverse content compared to twitter.

Hashtags and searching helps me find things
Just searched a hashtag of smth I'd be interested in off the top of my head and within 10 posts it's just my stuff from 6 months ago.

Yeah, this is a common problem. People often give advice thinking it's just a matter of not being able to find the topics, or laziness in trying to find the topics. Maybe if you follow more people it will help your feed? When in reality there just aren't many or sometimes any notes about lots of topics. Never mind a bustling group of people speaking meaningfully about it. And yes, not even talking about esoteric interests lol.
Nostr in various (often unintentional?) ways incestivises and cements a dominant (mono)topic / community.

E.g. Conceptually I’d like to understand more about what’s possible and why it matters.
E.g. Practically I don’t know what criteria to use to select relays for example. And I don’t know if being connected to a relay is enough to assume my posts get posted there.

Just a few thoughts from the last few days and not meant as criticism. I'm not a developer myself, so I don't want to complain too much :D
- When I go to relays, strange things happen (nostrudel). Why are random relays simply added?
- likes don't work sometimes, I need to reload the page.
- Zaps sometimes don't work and I have to reconnect my wallet (getalby).
- Damus has been the best client for me so far, unfortunately only available on apple. It also lacks a setting option like "trending," "latest," etc.. or I haven't found the setting yet.
- What's the benefit of paid relays, and why are they simply added, causing me to receive an error?
- nostrudel shows me that only "2/10" relays have registered my action, why?
Clients can be glitchy. Sometimes the follow button will just not work.
can’t delete my own posts… sometimes people over speak or over react, then a need to erase the wrongs strikes, leaving you with a sense of frustration when there’s nothing you can do to right your wrongs 🤷🏻♂️

Amethyst logs off and loses my settings when using Amber for logging in.
My Nostr Relay is seemingly never connected according to Settings in Primal GUI of Nostr.....red/green is always red 😢
The relay is running on UmbrelOS v1.2.2 on a Raspberry Pi 4 along with my Bitcoin node.

I don't have famous bitcoiners/investors following me.
My wallet is on one app (alby) and my nostr client is a different app (amethyst). And it's hard to tell what my sats balance is.
Also sometimes they get disconnected.

- very hard to tag people, even those I follow;
- I often see "events" and they don't load;
- I see a lot of "yes", "agreed", "totally" one after the other because the time-line is chronically order of follows, which is OK, but get no context unless I click on it.
Which app?
I'm using primal and amethyst.
Every app has its own peculiarities. If you are observing a behavior that you believe shouldnt be happening, tag the dev of the app (i.e. Vitor for amethyst, and Miljan for primal). You can use a basic rubric:
-what happens
-what I think should happen
-steps to recreate
-relevant noteID, neventID
-screenshots, or ideally screen recordings
Another thing that I just remembered: if someone sends a nostr note link, it's hard to get that to open in an app so I can engage with the note (reply, boost, like, etc), the same with a nostr profile.
