Lots of consternation about the comments that the VP of the Seattle Police Officers Guild made about a woman that was run down and killed by a police car (different officer) that was driving at 74 mph in downtown Seattle (25 mph zone) while responding to a call.

What no one is saying is that the call was to help someone thought to be overdosing on cocaine.

Why is the police risking the lives of innocent people walking on the street to save the life of an overdosing drug addict? THAT'S my question.

What are the chances that this business stays in Seattle?

Without property protection, everything else breaks down.

DIY PROJECT COMPLETE!!!

From "meh" to "ooh!" + external ventilation!!

fyi: probably not great for your lungs long term to burn methane, smoke oils, char steaks indoors without proper ventilation

I freakin' LOVED being able to (just barely) learn enough to do this! And it looks amazing. It took weeks and weeks of work (plus a heatstroke incident!) but it's so f'n satisfying! So proud of this!

It wasn't cheap, but I SAVED SO MUCH MONEY by doing most of it myself.

Total cost: $1,467

But of that:

* $250(?): roof contractor to cut the hole (was bundled w/other work so I don't know exactly how much the hole cost).

* $363: tools that I can now use for other projects (already planning a tile backsplash for my neighbor and my mom).

* $160: leftover consumable supplies to put towards the next job.

So really just $694 for the cost of the range hood ($309), backsplash tiles ($174), mortar, grout, sealer, piping, & misc supplies.

Firsts for this project:

* Removing an above-range microwave

* Removing installed cabinet

* Building a mount point by replacing drywall w/plywood drilled into the studs

* mixing & applying drywall mud

* using drywall tape

* sealing drywall

* removing the contractor's roof exhaust vent (wrong type! Urrg!)

* installing proper exhaust vent myself

* re-shingling and resealing(🤞) exhaust area

* using a v-trowel to apply tile mortar

* using a wet saw to cut glass and stone tiles

* rounding off glass/stone tile edge w/orbital sander

* attempting a tile inset (way too ambitious for my first tiling project!!)

* grouting tile

* applying grout sealer / stone enhancer

* dremel-cutting aluminum vent sections to length

Existing skills/tools leveraged:

* Photoshop to visualize / plan!

* table saw / mitre saw to cut the plywood anchor panel, the wood trim piece at the top, and the chimney sheath upper mount point.

* portable air compressor + nail gun for temp

* wood finishing (shellac, polyurethane) to the wood trim piece; tiny detail, but looks amazing (see below)!

* previous experience w/aluminum vent pipes

* basic outlet wiring (replaced gfci, raised mount point to tile surface)

* caulking (btw, caulk condoms work great!)

Downside of DIY:

I'm VERY slow and the kitchen was a disaster zone for WEEKS. But no wife or kids to worry about and nostr:npub1kumadawgefxjt2c293whsan5sfmdg5tylm0uk39enc6uxxfy5m4scrz2v7 never complains!

Congratulations! It looks amazing.

No te veo muy convencido. Si quieres envíalo para acá y así te ahorras el disgusto 😂

I see using different clients as a user preference and client choice.

In any case, creating a kind 1 sidekick event would let users of “kind 1 only" clients know that they can go to their long form client to check the new content

The main thing is that some clients don't support long form notes.

I like what nostr:npub1n0sturny6w9zn2wwexju3m6asu7zh7jnv2jt2kx6tlmfhs7thq0qnflahe does with Nostur: a tab for long form notes, so you can go there and see what's new from the people you follow.

That is a good user experience because it happens inherently as part of the established habit of reading notes in your everyday client.

Here are my 2 cents (long post, sorry):

Current status:

- Long form posts today on Nostr are difficult to discover because most clients don't support it and instead you need to go to a Nostr enabled web site like Habla.news to see who has posted something lately. This is very suboptimal

- Outside of Nostr, subscribers to newsletters receive them via email. They don't need a new client. They discover the new issue of the newsletter as part of their existing habit of checking their email

- The key here is that it's an existing habit on an existing client. No need to do anything new to discover new issues of the newsletter you subscribed yourself to.

Possible solutions:

- When a publisher posts a new issue on their newsletter, Habla.news could simultaneously create a kind 1 event with the summary and the URL to the issue. This will allow the publisher's followers to discover the new issue through their existing habit and client, even if the client doesn't support long form notes

- DM to all followers of the publisher. Could be considered obtrusive but let's face it, you're following that person for a reason.

- Using a public list for user subscriptions like nostr:npub107jk7htfv243u0x5ynn43scq9wrxtaasmrwwa8lfu2ydwag6cx2quqncxg suggests above will work. But, doesn't this defeat the purpose of Nostr? I have always thought of Nostr as a way to follow a person and all the content this person produces. Would the public list require me to take a second step of subscribing to the publisher on top of already following him/her?

Thanks! Will check it out

It's honestly incredible to me how many folks learned nothing from the Snowden drop. "Yeah, well everyone's on Gmail it's free and just so convenient."

If it's "free" then you are the product.

Make the switch to [ProtonMail](https://pr.tn/ref/0FES9KF6HHD0) for E2EE and get a free month of Plus. You can upload your own pgp keys, trust non-proton keys, etc. Full suite (Premium) includes Contacts, Calendar, VPN, Pass (for passwords and email aliasing/burners), and Drive (for files). I've been very happy with it for the past few years, and it just keeps getting better.
