I've got lots of unix experience, but coming from a deeply siloed work environment, I wouldn't ever want my life to depend on knowing how to set up a web server, lol

From the anecdotes of people who have set it up, it's dead simple to get running. Just a handful of commands to set up, no external web server or DB required.

That’s nice and I fully support such efforts :) sounds great for most self hosters just getting started. Though I would say running a battle tested reverse proxy like nginx or haproxy in front should always be standard practice.

Mastodon (the server software suite) is not exactly designed to be light or even super efficient.
As to the ES dependency question, it’s because ES is much better suited to this sort of thing. It’s designed to do efficient full text searching at scale. Postgres optimizes for other things. It does technically have the ability to do FTS but it’s not nearly as good at scale.

But yes I think like 2 versions ago they finally fixed *part* of the broken permissions model for location services lol.
