I agree, it's confusing with a lot of keys. Maybe Alby should use Nostr relays to storage the keys, so users don't need to save a lot of keys.

The next step for you is to copy the Lightning address you created in Alby and add it into your profile in the field that says Lightning address or Lightning tips. Once you do that we will see it and can #zap you. And Alby also lets you send zaps as well.

It’s called a custodial wallet because it’s managed by a third party. After you have had some time to explore how it works, you should look into using non-custodial wallets as well. Again, feel free to #AskNostr if you get stuck on anything!

Right. You’re correct that your private key should always be protected. By entering it directly into a client you’re not actually sending it to or sharing it with them, your browser is using it to sign events for you. It’s much safer to sign out of those clients and only use the Alby extension to access them in the future. This way you aren’t taking the risk of having it copied into your clipboard where you can accidentally paste it publicly.

Yes, your private key is sensitive. So you want to enter it sparingly. On mobile stick with highly reputable and open source clients. On the computer load your private key in Alby then login using alby. Most web clients support this and your private key is never shared with the client.

It is! Building real community without all of the gratuitous toxicity and influencer nonsense of traditional social media is an important shared goal here.

What clients have you tried out so far?

I can try to break those down for ya!

Alby: Nostr has native support for what we call "zaps". A zap is a micro payment (a.k.a tip) which anyone can send anyone else. These zaps use Bitcoin's lightning network to make the magic happen. Alby is an easy to use lightning wallet with native nostr features

Client: nostr is a protocol, not an app. It's just a set of standards for how apps *could* talk together. A nostr client is just an app that follows those standards. Client = App.

Public/Private keys: on nostr you don't have an account like a traditional platform. You have keys. Your public key is what you share so people can follow you, and your private key is your secret password. Whenever you do anything on the network your client will sign the event using your private key. If I have your public key I can look at that event and prove it was originally created by you. In this way your "account" is entirely portable. You just plug your key into a new app and all your data follows you (because you own your key)

Alby does several things.

First, it’s a browser extension to sign events on desktop clients so you never have to paste your private key into a website and potentially compromise it.

Second, it contains a Lightning wallet address. You should put that into your user profile so you can transact with other users, known as #zaps.
