Since you are doing local crypto sigs, it protects you from bad security practices by websites (storing credentials in plaintext, not salting hashes) or even data breaches that allow bruteforcing a password.

They work for me using bitwarden with self hosted instance but just on desktop.

Haven't tried using it with separate hardware devices. All the UX concerns are more than valid.
