Okay Nostur I see you

Okay Nostur I see you

>What bother you the most about this is the need of having a consensus and hence economic security needs ?

Precisely, yes. It's just another blockchain. Blockchain decentralization doesn't manifest in and of itself and every attempt other than Bitcoin are looking like failure so I don't see why it would be different here.

>And you don't believe that Bitcoin could be used as DA layer ?

Too expensive

>Validium

That's an option but I'm not sure how it would play out in practice. Overall it just seems overarchitectured. Another example is I have no reason to believe at the moment that fraud proof economic games are actually sustainable. They seem quite capital inefficient and I've read pretty serious concerns around the long term game theory.

I'm open to changing my minds but directionally I'm just not very impressed by the approach.

>Fragmentation

Fragmentation of social layers, liquidity, and yes interoperability. I just look at the way it's playing out on Ethereum and I don't see anything particularly appealing. It reminds me of internet gatekeeping platforms.

I just don't believe in decentralized sequencing. Nor do I believe you can trust DA layers. You are basically trusting other blockchains with new types of incentives. I haven't seen anything design that seems robust or sustainable. Most involve yet another token which is doomed to fail. Escape hatches are cool but they will be too expensive for just about anyone.

In this context, fragmentation is my biggest concern. I am ready to concede trust where needed (ex: I like ecash of course) but I prefer designs that optimize for market optionality (ie. cost of operating service provider is maximally low)

Give this guy a follow Nostriches

I'm personally not a big fan of ZK as a scaling solution for Bitcoin but DVMs and zero-knowledge computation seems like a match made in heaven.

I wrote about Lightning’s understated but impressive showing at Bitcoin 2024

The future is here ⚡️

My two favorite Nashville conference Nostr moment:

Running into nostr:npub1zach44xjpc4yyhx6pgse2cj2pf98838kja03dv2e8ly8lfr094vqvm5dy5 and chatting about the incredible work he is doing on improve nsec security using FROST. Brilliant stuff. Secure key management is coming and it's going to change everything.

Meeting the nostr:npub1yzvxlwp7wawed5vgefwfmugvumtp8c8t0etk3g8sky4n0ndvyxesnxrf8q team and hearing their INCREDIBLE story. I truly felt like a zero-to-one moment for me. It was the first time I connected with Nostr folks I had no Bitcoin connection to. I'm looking forward to see them again in Riga already.

I love Nostr 💜

First time hearing about security cameras?

Lendasat is based on similar tech (DLCs) though they are taking a pretty different approach which I'd consider still experimental.

It's like Hodl Hodl without an escrow.

Which feed algo are you using most on Primal?

Right now it's "Latest with replies" seems to be doing best job for me

Danny and I just wrapped up the final episode of What Bitcoin Did at Bitcoin Park, recording with some of our closest friends in #bitcoin - nostr:npub1cn4t4cd78nm900qc2hhqte5aa8c9njm6qkfzw95tszufwcwtcnsq7g3vle , nostr:npub1qny3tkh0acurzla8x3zy4nhrjz5zd8l9sy9jys09umwng00manysew95gx and nostr:npub10cxz2h7n6rumfpuf49zt4uvm7skzqk5u25vesp0tzdtnkvsnwjyqaffcj3, along with special appearances, including my son.

The episode will be released on August 30th. After that, we'll take a week off before launching our new show (the worst-kept secret).

After 7 years, 860 podcasts, countless flights, and visiting about 40 countries, the time is right. Time is precious. I need to travel less and focus on Bedford, the football team, family and bringing to life everything we've discussed over the past 7 years.

I believe we're entering a new era where #bitcoin is a legitimate part of every conversation. Our new show will reflect this, so we’re building a studio in London and evolving the format where #bitcoin is the heartbeat not the headline.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this. I couldn’t have done any of this without the kindness and generosity of so many of you, especially nostr:npub16le69k9hwapnjfhz89wnzkvf96z8n6r34qqwgq0sglas3tgh7v4sp9ffxj .

I'm humbled by it all and everyone of you.

Big love ✌🏻

Lot of respect for what you've built and the progress and willingness to change you've shown over the years.

The best ones can adapt and reinvent themselves. Looking forward to your the chapter.

ANNOUNCEMENT: The University of Wyoming has established the UW Bitcoin Research Institute. uwyo.edu/bitcoin

The BRI aims to produce high-quality peer-reviewed publications about bitcoin from all academic disciplines.

First act: hiring nostr:npub1yezu4atsdgchvlyjz5efwks8n7ze2rssq674qe04m5pp8e5y32tqfdawc7!

Much academic bitcoin research is quite poor, because it's done by people who don't understand bitcoin.

Mora et al predicted "bitcoin alone could push emissions 2 degrees".

They failed to account for the difficulty adjustment *and* didn't know there was a block size cap!

Others like Taleb’s infamous "Bitcoin Black Paper" are unaware of Layer 2s like Lightning, and others are unaware of the supply cap -- perhaps bitcoin's most distinctive feature. Others make faulty assumptions about bitcoin user demographics.

These mistakes make their way into journalism, and policy. Bitcoin is multi-faceted in theory, and even more so in practice. Journalists can't be experts, so they rely on academics. Too many of those academics have let them down.

The good news is that there is good academic research on bitcoin. Work by Will Luther, nostr:npub18wgtxzhx75qd2aq3gn35mcv5m8zx7z6xdsf6a95asltys70deekqqjr2wn , nostr:npub12lzwey2hjc2ce0stwa3ldhg04h93wj263lvdhrf87qfzz9jsggeqwuntw2 , nostr:npub10afr060h0g3vf2ykynr6cvw2u7ta3tzpgjczfyufp420aeeen0xszf0xj0 , Matthew Ferranti, nostr:npub1ws69pst0kcaqa9cgm85l3xzkqrfuphldu5dv6r5cp8tjjzfyv82s5vxzeg and others understands and explains bitcoin very well.

But for academics interested in bitcoin, the incentives often don't line up. Few advisors will let their advisees focus on bitcoin, so bitcoin projects must be side projects. And without advisor or community support, these projects are rarely taken on.

The Bitcoin Research Institute fixes the incentives. We provide a community who can support scholars and give critical feedback on their projects, and we provide funds for travel and lodging.

We're removing barriers for scholars who want to work on bitcoin.

More academic work on bitcoin should be done by people who understand bitcoin. The BRI aims to produce that work, which will filter up to journalists and policymakers.

The University of Wyoming is the perfect place for this, with Sen Lummis, nostr:npub1uyz4w2w4rcphk0q5arzkutrecgscxwzajj4dkvh9mjyqjtxslm6qea8632 , State Sen Rothfuss, Law School Dean Julie Hill, Steve Lupien, bitcoin miners using all kinds of energy like nostr:npub1k7tcreyu0w970fxsht8ccw54az2yh27agf4x2s92crwam9mw9cws558edl , a School of Energy Resources, School of Environment and Natural Resources...

The UW Bitcoin Research Institute is a 501c(3) nonprofit. Because of nostr:npub1uyz4w2w4rcphk0q5arzkutrecgscxwzajj4dkvh9mjyqjtxslm6qea8632 , the University -- and by extension the BRI -- can accept bitcoin directly. And UW allocates 4% of our investments to bitcoin, so if you donate bitcoin to the BRI, we will NOT sell it.

If you're a scholar and you want to be involved, my DMs are open!

If you're a journalist and you want to learn more, my DMs are open!

If you want to support our work, you can do so here: https://www.givecampus.com/campaigns/49172/donations/new
