Burning street barricades and violent protests have rocked the Belgian suburb of Liège since late last week, sparked by the police killing of 32-year-old Domenico D'atria during a traffic stop. The local mayor described the riots as "anti-cop revenge protests."
The mayor compared the unrest with the nationwide riots in France this summer following the racist police killing of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk. "[Some] draw parallels with what happened in France with the death of Nahel" – said Mayor Serge Fillot.
Police banned gatherings and cracked down on the protests with a large deployment of riot police backed by water cannons. According to local media, cooperation with the national intelligence service prevented the protests from spilling into the capital Brussels.

The announcement of a "D-Day" for a military invasion to overthrow the coup in Niger by neighboring states from the regional ECOWAS alliance sparked massive protests in the Nigerien capital Niamey. Protesters shouted slogans against former colonial power France, which backs ECOWAS, and held signs reading "No to military invasion."
ECOWAS has its back to the wall as seven coups have shaken the political status quo in the region over the last three years. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, which occupy about 50 percent of the original ECOWAS territory and are all led by similar coup governments and have entered into a military alliance.
ECOWAS announced military units were "ready to go anytime the order is given" and that "D-Day is also decided." Niger's coup leaders have threatened to respond militarily to the invasion and have said they are monitoring troop movements at the border that are "in collaboration with a foreign army" but gave no details.
Western powers, most notably France and the US, announced support for ECOWAS plans, threatening an inter-African war. The deposed government in Niger, a country rich in natural resources but also desperately poor, had good relations with Western governments.

In 2023 the "Mediterranean mass grave" has seen a five-year high in migrant deaths. 2260 dead or missing migrants were reported in the Mediterranean so far in 2023.
A total of 28,009 migrants, including 1135 children, have died or disappeared on the Mediterranean route since the Missing Migrants Project began recording in 2014.
The Mediterranean's rough waters make the route "the most dangerous in the world," where one in six migrants who set sail from the North African coast die.
Meanwhile, the EU continues to close Europe's external borders to migrants from the Global South through the coast guard agency FRONTEX, which has been involved in human rights abuses, including deadly pushbacks.
The EU plans to increase FRONTEX'S budget to $6.9 billion until 2027. FRONTEX has been withholding information about its responsibility for the catastrophic shipwreck off the Greek coast earlier this year, which killed over 600 people.
"Fortress Europe" has also established multi-million dollar contracts with Mediterranean "front-line" countries to allow them to stop migration. Tunisia, which receives $112 million from the EU, has seen pogroms against Black migrants over the last months, fueled by the racist conspiracy theories of President Kais Saied.
European countries are increasingly pursuing dehumanizing migration policies, such as the UK's new Bibby Stockholm barge to detain migrants, which has been compared to a "floating prison".
