Buenos dรญas y Pura Vida

Have Zappy Friday๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿœ

Calcium hydrate aka Lime is not only what we used in rammed earth walls and earthen floors to avoid using so much cement but it is also the basis for the "paint" for the shops.

Lime, water, salt with mineral oxides for color. The entire building was "painted", lime washed for less than $50usd. If we made it white it would be like $6usd.

This "Cal" as it's called in Mexico is non toxic, cheap and held up for a year full dun, hurricanes winds and rain.

Why we dont do more of this where we can in the world. Paints, stains and sealers can be very toxic, but not the ranch.

Earthen floors.

We are all learning including the Abanil (Mason) who is floating the final coat.

He goes back over the pours, days later as they cure, shrink and crack something you cannot do with cement. Getting level is tough due to shrinkage but hes on it and it's looking great so far.

Less than $50usd in lime in the whole floor, sifted sand, dirt, lime, water mix. Oil soap finish and wax probably another $100usd.

Haven't been able to find what kind. Used to use similar lichens for trees and shrubs on model train set when a kid.

When searching images it looks more similar to moss but I think it's a lichen too.

Woohoo

Buenos dรญas on this foggy morning.

Any botanist out there that can identify this moss or fungus that grows on most of the plants on the ranch. It's obvious the symbiotic relationship. It acts a a dew collector for the plants. Soaking wet sponges that hodl water and then can dry out daily. Great for starting fires๐Ÿœ.

Beautiful foggy morning..rarely rains here but we have a river in the air many mornings. Cleaned up the buggy just using the dew and wiping it down.

We will be testing dew nets and screens, as well as develop a way to capture water off solar panels.

We have water but I like to not abuse it. We get by just using what nature provides passively in many ways.

.

Cookshack, pleb kitchen and shower house finally getting finished up..the interior earthen floor will be done today except for a few weeks of oil and curing.

Takes much more time as we experiment with methods and materials. Learning a lot more almost everyday. Will have much to share on how to build with soil, rock and wood.
