as in Nitrogen Fixing Trees...the one on the left is a very old mesquite I drive under and left is a giant palo verde.

You get mesquite below. They are of the legumes family and have nodules on the roots with pockets of rhizobium bacteria, the nitrogen-fixing microorganisms. Natural fertilizer producing plants.

From the colorful topo map we get miles n miles of swales , dams and eventually ponds for capturing or slowing g up the runoff during rainy season...

Now to survey those lines so we know where roads, buildings, farming and ranching belong on the 1000+acre property.

A little plant class, Luffa or Loofah 101

What's a Luffa?

Natural sponge that grows as a gourd looking fruit on green vines. Once fully grown and dried you can harvest and clean off skin and dump out the many seeds and you have a sponge.

You can see how the bottom of the gourd has a cap that pops off once driven and the seeds fall out naturally.

Can be an invasive plant but no worries here in the desert. Just quit watering and itll die off. My first harvest are small but grew about 12 and half a lot more seeds now.

Great for body scrub as well as pots and pans. Naturally grown sponge with hemp soaps and shampoos to stay clean while keeping the environment clean.

Everyone that comes to the ranch gets their own new sponge 😉

Mine was in my sailboat, no problem just keep oiled up with fat.

Yesterdays project was to grind down my old iron skillet to refurbish after what I realized over 50 years of my use. It was my 1st purchase at a swap meet where I negotiated the guy down from $2.00 to $1.75, back when 25 cents meant something in 72'

It was used and rusted when I bought it but mom explained the old ones are better.

Turns out truer than ever these days. This old Griswold #8, 740z is worth at $100usd. Cast iron NGU! Try that with stainless🤣

The new ones are cheaply made and heavier. Cast iron 101 research, better buy used and refurbish.

Anyhow got it cleaned and on the bbq to cure while slow smoking a leg of lamb.
