Amazes me how persistent life is in the desert. The stem was cutoff and discarded as garbage and the smaller leaf is only a couple of inches I trimmed off a rotten pad.

Niether did really believe would grow yet both within a week have new life...

I truck water in for now, have an old dry well at 60 feet. I'll double the depth and have plenty of water when needed. With just myself here and just spot ag irrigation its much cheaper to just truck it in for now.

Also putting 26 miles of swales and burms with ponds to begin capturing much more water much higher up on the mesa...eventually it could produce springs on my lower property.

Permaculture takes time but as a bitcoiner I have a lower time preference. No hurry as I'll never finish this never ending project.

Kind of like this cactus stem that was cutoff as garbage. Then when planted just to see what could happen and now more life.

Been busy busy getting this IBC wicking bed made. Never done one and as I researched them it seems many dont put wicks in but I did as you can see. Some cotton wadding and some geo tested cloth like I used to seperate soil n water.

Then I placed peat moss perlite mix around them and filled in with soil mix..

I put in 25lbs peat moss

125lbs soil

30lbs organic fertilizer

30lbs compost

And I'll probably add another 30 to 40lbs.

I dug a couple of holes and left them for the night to see if there was wicking action. Photo of wet hole and small transplant.

Plenty of wet soil below. Should be fine for what I'm growing.

Buenos días nostriches...

All fired up for a great week ahead🤙

I wanted to share a little on the potting soil we use for the plants in our #nursery:

What we are looking for is a medium that drains easily, yet retains moisture. The cost is also a factor.

Since we pot mostly perennials, I also am looking for a fungally dominant potting mix vs. bacterially dominant as you'd have with fresh compost.

Wood chips around here are easy to get by the truckload, and I use well rotted ones for the basis of my compost mix. And by "rotted" I mean "rotted": They look like soil and are completely broken down by fungus, it takes about 2-3 years.

On top of the wood chips I add about 5% by volume charged biochar. About half of this is sifted to 1/4" + and the other half of the biochar is right out of the leaf vacuum I use to crush it up. The biochar is charged with azomite, sea minerals, worm casts, and effective microorganisms (EM-1). We make the biochar right here on the farm. It serves both to provide and retain nutrients and moisture as well as provide drainage:

Then worm castings sifted to 1/8" and finer at around 5% by volume. I also raise the worms for the casts, the current system involves growing them in 4'x8' Waste Management Bagsters:

Finally about 1 quart of activated EM-1. This is 1 oz Terraganix EM-1 mixed with 1 oz blackstrap molasses in 30 oz of water:

This all gets mixed up by hand, and then we use it to pot our plants.

I mix it in a gorilla cart which will provide enough for about 25-30 trade gallon pots.

Hope you have an awesome weekend.

Here's the mother of many of my new cactus starts at the ranch. This nopal is only a couple years old and never directly watered.

I'll be back in a few weeks to harvest more pads. They also have shared many other species like dragon and passion fruit that I'm planting this morning.

Not for me to eat but it is the variety everyone eats. If anything I'll it feed to a cow and eat them. I eat vegans so I don't have to be one🤣

I'm growing for fodder for humans, livestock and energy.

Planting my new solar field of Nopal cactus, planted parallel to contour for capturing runoff.

Planted 15 so far with small shovel full of sand and perlite. Hopefully little to no irrigation necessary.

Planting another 35 in other locations to test different soils.

Beautiful cool morning. Many dont like foggy days but when you live in a hot desert it makes for an awesome contrast. Everywhere else in the state is already 20 degrees hotter than here...

After everything gets a good watering it'll burn off and get up to 90's today ith an ocean breeze.

Get some #nature n have an awesome Sunday🤙
