A dificuldade de mineração de bitcoins reflete a dificuldade no cálculo do #hash de um novo bloco. Esta dificuldade é alterada +/- a cada 2 semanas (mais precisamente 2016 blocos) e serve para manter o tempo médio de produção de novos blocos em +/- 10 minutos. A dificuldade aumenta e diminui conforme o poder de processamento da rede, ou seja, é diretamente proporcional ao poder de processamento da rede. Se houver um aumento de poder de processamento a dificuldade vai aumentar e se diminuir a dificuldade diminui. Desta forma o algoritmo do bitcoin core mantém os incentivos necessários aos mineradores para que haja um equilíbrio entre gastos e ganhos uma vez que quanto mais difícil for produzir um bloco mais energia vai ser necessária.
Muito resumidamente e simplificando, aumentar a dificuldade significa que os mineradores terão de resolver uma charada matemática mais difícil. Essa charada matemática (calculo do hash) terá de ter mais ou menos zeros à esquerda conforme a dificuldade.
