Ideally Nostr clients wouldn’t display content as replies from people they muttered and reported. I know this is a controversial position, but the way I see it being a reply guy in my threads is like coming in to my personal space when I don’t want it. Just like we can kick out a rude houseguest, they aren’t banished from the town, just my small part of it.
I want nostr to be a space for queer Palestinian drag queens like nostr:npub1lq9lx5mh2m3pvdnckcta7h7h07qexa3gxvyakdzt73lqp3prt3jqx9pa2e who are being shadow banned and deplatformed by Meta and Instagram. I want nostr to be a space for activists who face state surveillance and repression.
And I’m fine with there being people on nostr who hate me, so long as I don’t have listen to them or have them inject themselves in to my content and conversations.
Controls that would do what you're asking for are called algorithms. They could be built into a single client, but I wouldn't want them to be built into the protocol layer. Seeing something I don't like in a conversation thread is unavoidable, because no matter how much we would wish that all humans are reasonable and caring individuals that we would enjoy interacting with, it's never going to be true. The only way to build a feed that makes us happy is to be able to see the wall that protects that feed, and that means we have to see the ugly to recognize it and have simple solutions in place to deal with it.
The way I understand things, and please correct me if I'm wrong, there are two ways to build a wall.
Mute, which prevents anything from a profile from showing up in our feed.
Block, which mutes and also prevents anything from our profile from showing up on their feed.
We should be able to control the wall. If anyone or anything else controls what we see, we're no different than any of the corporate platforms, allowing others to control our feed. That's my concern.
Actually, this is exactly why Nostr will win. Because people like this can put out their text messages and we don't have to see them unless we choose to see them.
Thanks for pointing out the profiles that we want to mute, nostr:npub1wmr34t36fy03m8hvgl96zl3znndyzyaqhwmwdtshwmtkg03fetaqhjg240
I wouldn't call the Red vs. Blue contest in our national politics to be an illusion or a false choice, I consider it to be a distraction. What matters are the issues. ALL of the issues.
The United States uses First Past the Post elections as the base layer protocol of our democracy. Whichever side or candidate can get 50%+1 of the voters who cast a ballot wins it all. This dynamic quickly showed itself as a problem after the very first vote in Congress of a bill, which was Alexander Hamilton's Tariff Act of 1789. There were people in Congress who voted for it, who then started calling themselves "Federalists", and people who voted against it, who started calling themselves "Democratic Republicans". You can trace the evolution and dynamic nature of our entire election history by looking at how the political parties evolved over time.
The best way to deal with elections is not by a single issue deciding factor, but by looking across the spectrum of issues and deciding where WE stand on those issues. Then run a comparison with the candidates on the ballot or ballot measures, and see how they measure up to how we want the world to turn out. If a single issue can sway you towards a candidate who otherwise only matches your vision of the world by 40% or less, we really need to ask ourselves if sacrificing all of the other issues we care about are worth that one deciding factor.
I have found isidewith.com to be one of the best source of questions and comparisons that is out there. I wish the devs of the app were on Nostr.
Imagine how Star Wars would have gone if the Red Leader had constantly insulted Blue Leader, and they returned fire.
The Empire would have won. And that's what we are seeing
and IPFS. Not Filecoin, necessarily, but the storage network.
I don't think he has a clue, nor do any of his handlers.
Imagine if retailers and sellers were required to receive back all packaging and reuse or recycle it, at no cost to the consumer. We talk about circular supply chains all the time, but what about supply chains that work in both directions?
A way to visualize a local network of users AROUND places that accept Bitcoin for payment would be amazing. Like being able to plug in a Zipcode in our profile and getting notifications when a new place comes online that will accept Bitcoin, and perhaps a hashtag or something similar that will identify people who are interested in building a circular economy close to where we live or where we are. All voluntary of course.
The main thing missing from the Bitcoin system is an income stream. You can do it if you are mining it yourself or if you invest in a mining pool, but too many of those are scams these days. Wish that wasn't the case.
Stablecoins covert debt instruments (fiat currency) into an asset. It's a less perfect asset than Bitcoin, but it can act in the same way and provide the same user experience.
I'm just looking forward to the day where 1 USD = 100 sats, and we start to see people waking up to realizing that there is a better path forward.
I'm thinking about a comprehensive list of communities, businesses and places that we can stay or go while paying in Bitcoin/LN. Having a list of npubs that we can support and see how people are doing.
a growing number of grassroots, but none of the leadership. which is a nice combination.
Joe, are you keeping a list of the circular economies that you are visiting and talking about?
