#asknostr

Is it helpful or annoying (or both) to use a huge amount of hashtags to net your post more visibility?

Like if it’s super-specific to the content, that’s cool. And keeping it on-topic will earn you mad respect (hat-tip to nostr:npub12z8jsett3k6rv9fa2guau5p540qr2xuvjzkr8e432mglafjt99sqkw9zmx and your delightful and tasteful nature/flower posts, for context).

But there are some posts/posters which choose “best hashtags for visibility” … and that’s usually a mute from me. I think one of nostr’s core values is authenticity. That’s why “no delete”. It’s why off-brand hashtags immediately dilute the substance of the post.

It’s why I am so reluctant to repost my own posts, even though I know the environment requires reposts to accommodate the absence of toxic algorithms and a global network across 24 time zones.

I agree. It's super annoying to see hashtags that I'm following because I'm interested in they content be on a post that I have absolutely no interest in, or worse actively don't want to see.

Dude I don't even follow you and you show up in my feed more than anybody else. Maybe I need to unfollow the meme hashtag lol.

I know, that's why I like using brave

Living in the Bitcoin world for so long my first thought is just why would they use anything but lightning? Nothing else is nearly as good.

Three years ago ago I took a grazing school course from this man Greg Judy. One of the most forward thinking and powerful voices in permaculture and regenerative ag. Yet still one of the most down to earth. He and Joel Salatin were huge inspirations in getting onto a homestead and growing my own food.

Getting land for cattle was a huge motivation for me and still the ultimate goal is to bring cattle on my property. It's been a long slow grind with a full time job preparing the property for this goal, but seeing this picture pop up in the timeline gives me motivation to keep going.

Hopefully I'll be bringing cattle on this winter and then the real work begins.

Small rant. I hate the lack of ability to edit notes in nostr. I would guess 50% of my notes have spelling or grammar errors in them, and even if I read through them they always seem to slip through. This is mostly due to using my phone and autocorrect kills me.

Also, side note, my phone really really does not want me to use the word fiat. I'm going to equate this to a grand conspiracy.

Ok so it was a busy day in the fiat mines but wanted to circle back around to this.

I didn't necessarily mean it has no uses whatsoever, just fewer uses than most other metals, while still retaining the values that you listed which means also that you can store it almost indefinitely and it will still not degrade. This means you can rely on it holding its value. This is also another aspect of what made good such good currency for so long.

Also when you list things like it was useful for aesthetically pleasing/cosmetic or religious purposes that's not really what I'm talking about, I'm taking more specifically about using the metal practically as a way to gain capital by putting it to use in business purposes.

Religious iconography or great works of art might be comparable because the world has regarded those things as fitting the aesthetically pleasing/religious category but they don't exactly make good money or builders of capital which is why I would discount those two categories as being helpful in determining the usefulness of someone. (Not trying to necessarily discount importance, merely raw economic potential).

There are people who think that, as a white male, just me existing is racist. Why would this surprise me?

Is it just me, or does it seem like everyone is super reluctant to monetize services and relays on #Nostr?

If we can’t make these things sustainable then we will either lose them, or they will stay nothing more than a weird little corner of the internet with lots of hope but no chance of ever scaling.

I still haven’t seen the basic model of zap sharing tried by any major client or relay. But I DO see regularly comments about how expensive relays are. I mean it might not work, but can’t we TRY it?

I want to make the distinction here too that this doesn’t mean we are closing off the network, we are adding permissions to the protocol, this doesn’t suggest at all to used closed source code, we simply need the services necessary to keep this ecosystem robust, to be profitable and have the resources to thrive. If they aren’t, then NONE of this works. Economics is everything.

I know building features is more exciting. I know we all want to make everything that we can free, and I agree all of the *code* should be shared. However, I think there is a natural insecurity (and I say this because I have this problem personally) with charging a fair price, and fearing criticism or the ire of people who believe everything should be free (as in price) when we need things to be free (as in Liberty). They are not the same, and confusing the two could stifle, or drastically slow down, the insane potential of this place.

TL;DR We have GOT to divert some energy to thinking about how to make this ecosystem sustainable, or we will lose it.

(Disclaimer: this isn’t a judgement on whoever is thinking about this problem. It just *seems* like few are. If you are building in this way please share your ideas or what you are trying. I’m extremely interested)

Agreed. As a developer, I'd love to put some time and energy in developing for nostr, but I also have a family to provide for and spend time with so it needs to be monetarily worth that time.

I honestly would love jury duty. I have a feeling that I would be dismissed very quickly though. I have trouble pretending to be a dumb liberal.

Just don't let on that you know about it!!

Yeah man there's nothing like just having some beers with friends and letting the conversation get there naturally. Most of them are pretty libertarian so it's easy to start with how bad fiat is.

Oh and thanks for the sats man! Much appreciated.
