I recently started watching Forged In Fire, and it's gotten me curious to do some forge work.

Your knife looks really nice, from this photo. I look forward to a pic when it's finished!

Went to a blacksmithing workshop tonight with family and made some stuff. I made the larger of the two knives pictured from a raw chunk of high carbon steel.

The knife was forged using a combination of hand and power tools.

I've got some minor touch up work I want to do before I make the scales for the handle.

This is the third knife I've made... First from raw steel. It's a lot of fun but also a lot of work. I'd highly recommend it if you've got something like this locally. The workshop we did was well suited for all skill levels with helpful instructors.

Wood is a mix of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

Cellulose is a linear polymer (chain) of glucose molecules. Its decomposition is a piece of cake compared to hemicellulose, which has “jaggies” sticking out on the sides of a chain. One might imagine something looking like the cutting chain on a chainsaw. It presents decomposer organisms added difficulty, but nothing like lignin.

Lignin is a decomposer’s worst nightmare. It’s not simple and straight. It’s not jagged and straight. Lignin is an autistic, nightmarish matrix of carbon rings bursting forth in every direction.

Need a resiliency mentor? Look no further. Most enzymes “recognize” specific molecular shapes, lock on to them and start cutting. Not so with lignin. There is no specific shape to recognize, so enzymes are incompetent for the job.

It took white-rot fungi millions of years to figure out how to produce peroxidases. If you can’t cut it, burn it! A torrent of free radicals released from these peroxidases cracks open Lignin.

Once peroxidases became a tool in the utility belt of the mushroom, all bets were off and the face of the planet was forever changed.

AGI by 2028 should be the only thing people talk about. I think it isn't because people don't believe it will happen, and 2028 sounds far away.

Not being a well known pundit and having little to lose, I give you my two sats: when used to its potential, Claude 3.5 Sonnet (New) is almost indistinguishable from AGI today.

We could debate the hard requirements of AGI means, but that would only support how far AI has come in the last few years. So here's my counterbalance to "AGI might happen in 2028, if it ever happens":

AGI will happen in 2025

Find a way to be in top of it, in order to avoid being underneath it. What if I'm off by a year? Well, at least you'll be prepared for 2026. If this sounds absurd you aren't using AI anywhere near its current potential.
