We’re a news organization that’s different: trustworthy, nonprofit, independent, written by researchers and scientists, and committed to the free flow of information. Every article is written by an academic in collaboration with experienced editors who help them write clearly. Our banner shows just a few of the people who have written for us.

This early summer heat wave is especially brutal because our bodies haven’t adapted yet to summer heat (and yes, they do after about two weeks). More useful information from an expert on heat-related illnesses.

Biden’s new executive order will changes the lives of many immigrant families.

More from two migration scholars who study the mixed-citizenship marriages who will benefit from undocumented spouses gaining a path to legalization:

“When one family member cannot safely travel, work or access health care, all family members suffer. The opposite is also true. When a family member is able to shift from living without legal status in the U.S. to getting legal status, the lives of the entire family improve.”

Thanks for thinking of us! But we’re not the type of news organization that sends out reporters to cover events or stories.

Our distinct role is to help academic experts explain issues to the public, based on their research.

For instance, we recently published a look at this nationwide trend of school boards getting caught up in national culture war issues: https://theconversation.com/school-boards-long-locally-focused-and-nonpartisan-get-dragged-into-the-national-political-culture-wars-229143

New research finds that the top 1% of American companies control 90% of U.S. production-related assets and account for 80% of sales revenue.

So – a relatively small number of companies are responsible for the majority of U.S. economic activity.

For these companies, their planning – particularly their coordination of activities across global supply chains – plays a crucial role in the #economy overall.

More #AI isn’t better, especially when it comes to #customerservice. Service business owners shouldn’t automatically jump on the AI bandwagon but instead should make a choice informed by their #BusinessStrategy (unlike CEOs of some large corporations we could mentions).

4 “rules” to consider:

1. Strike a strategic balance. For predictable tasks, such as payments, automation enhances efficiency and sacrifices little. Complex and varied customer needs, however, demand the flexibility and empathy of human expertise and interaction.

2. Leverage strengths. Use AI to navigate tasks such as data analysis and decision-making processes where objectivity and comprehensiveness are crucial.

3. Seek opportunities for synergy. Encourage dynamic interaction between human capabilities and AI technologies, so each can learn from the other.

4. Consider the context. Assess the specific needs and values of your customers to determine the appropriate mix of human and technological resources.

And recognize that this balance may shift over time as technologies advance and client expectations change

"Dad, I’m hungry."

"Hi, hungry. I’m Dad."

Ah, the Dad Joke.

What makes something a dad joke instead of just a corny joke? We've got two folklorists answering that question and looking at the history of the 'art' form.

Happy #FathersDay to all the Dads out there, funny or not!

The first commercial gambling operations emerged – by chance or not – at the same time as the study of mathematical probability in the mid-1600s.

Early writers on probability had explained how the ‘house advantage’ didn’t need to be large for a gambling enterprise to profit enormously.

But gamblers and gambling operators were slow to catch on.

America saw an upsurge of devotion to the flag, and writing of the pledge of allegiance, after the Civil War.

Then, on #FlagDay 70 years ago today, President Eisenhower signed a bill adding “under God” to the pledge – cementing the semi-religious nature of the pledge.

Are you a fan of board games? Long before there was Risk and Scrabble, the new United States had "The Travellers' Tour", which first appeared in 1822, but whose claim to fame was forgotten for decades.

The design of the game has a lot to say about how the young country saw itself. https://theconversation.com/what-americas-first-board-game-can-teach-us-about-the-aspirations-of-a-young-nation-228581 #News #history #gaming

Donald Trump is now the first sitting or former U.S. president to be convicted of a felony.

But in other countries, ex-leaders have been investigated, prosecuted and even jailed – in the interest of protecting the rule of law.

In the 1970s and 1980s, bands made money from album sales and concerts just promoted the album.

In the 2020s, bands make pennies from streams and rely on concerts to make money.

But as the law professors point out in the article, the company that runs TikTok is incorporated in the US, and thus is subject to US law.

That they are a subsidiary of a Chinese corporation (which is not owned by the Chinese government) doesn't change the legal status of the US entity.
