I think the idea to have a joint unconference in Japan and Hong Kong is a bad idea.
Why not just Japan only?
HKongers will take up Nostr to enhance their fight for freedom. They are super tech savvy and normal social media is heavily policed right now. So, Nostr is the obvious answer. HK doesnāt need a conference for HKongers to take this up. In fact, it could work to get Damus and others quickly banned as the Gov becomes wise to Nostrās potential. I presume Damus is not banned in HK at the moment cus I downloaded Damus and my phone downloads are governed by HK laws too.
I strongly believe that HKās take up of Nostr should be more on the down-low until itās ubiquitous and harder to stamp out by the Gov. Right now in HK, any gathering needs to be registered with the police and they film EVERYTHING! I spent more than a decade of my life writing about and attending every protest in HK. The police and Gov arenāt fucking around. The entire democratically elected opposition of HK are either in prison, with no conviction, or have fled the city.
Itās illegal to wear masks in the city so as to cover up your identity. Stop and search by police is everywhere. You canāt refuse even though the laws say you can. HK is a police state in every sense of the word. Andā¦. What? Nostr developers are going to fly in to talk about it?
Hong Kongers are going to attend a public conference and broadcast to the police who they are?
Stoooopid!

Good luck with the National Security Law in HK. Venue is gonna be full of CCP š¤¦š¼āāļø
Good luck with the National Security Law in HK trying to run a conference that decentralises media. Itās everything the HK and Chinese govs have tried to destroy.
CCP gonna be sucking up all ya data. Taking names and numbers.
Proof of work versus proof of stake āļøāļø
Not my meme, but itās just to champion not to share.
HKās latest buzz topic to get itself outta the shit heap it threw itself into is to become a ātech hubā. Firstly, HK has announced it will be about 20 different kind of hubs in last 20+years. None exist, except as a hub for repression and authoritarianism.
Secondly, HK authorities ARE interested in tech and do want to promote it, but not the kinda tech Nostr is built on. China wants to export tech it can control and kill tech that canāt be controlled. At the height of the protest movement, HKongers were the most digitally connected network on the net, and they pioneered many original tactics, like coordinating protests via airdrop. Conversely the HK police are very active in prosecuting people for their online views and actions and constantly send police actions to social media platforms. Iām sure HKongers will migrate to Nostr as they learn about it and realise they canāt be censored here - but it doesnāt need a conference infested with CCP spies to do this.
I spent 22 years of my life in Hong Kong and was very active in the protests movement.
Itās simply not rationale to try and have a Nostr freedom conference in HK without risking having all your data mined by CCP.
Anyone who tells you differently and says HK is friendly towards tech is being disingenuous, naive or both. HK is a police state in every sense of the word. A Nostr conference in HK would be a honey pot for intel.
Better to go to Japan.
So, first images on Damus were too small. Now theyāre too big. Can we find the Goldilocks size please

Am totally loving my new avatar.
Loving the Skull of Satoshi, it really captures how a future world without #BitcoinĀ is place where the environment is completely tipped over the edge from fiat greed and excess.

If you want to experience what itās like to build and live in a horizontal #bitcoin citadel then move to Costa Rica šØš·

Slowly the dream is disassembled, waiting for its next manifestation.

Pete McCormack on his latest Pod, āI donāt think my brother, sister, friends give a shit about decentralised Twitter!ā
Wow!
He really doesnāt understand Nostr at all! Like not even close to getting it.
He then goes on later in the pod to complain several times about pervasive, toxic social media.
He is one confused puppy right now.
The American dream is slowly moving south to Central America. š
Maybe Nostrica is just a ethereal place, inhabited by purple ostriches and can manifest anywhere in the world people come together to talk about Nostr?
I think the days of thinking things need to be in the US, otherwise it wonāt get traction are numbered. The centre of gravity is moving. There are many people who attended #Nostrica who thought more than once, what would my life be like if I lived in Costa Rica? This is the point of Pura Vida. Reimagining the world, reimagining a new life that is not constrained by old ways. The US is now part of the old world.
I think it would be better for the name to be non proprietary and anyone can organise another conference using the brand if they can get enough traction and gravitational pull. The brand is only as good as those who are willing to support it. It doesnāt exist outside of the people
Then what would be the propose if itās merely incidental?
Seems like a pretty centralised organisational structure for a decentralised protocol. š¤
