Thanks for a great 2023. May 2024 be even better.

nostr:npub1kmwdmhuxvafg05dyap3qmy42jpwztrv9p0uvey3a8803ahlwtmnsnhxqk9 Let’s connect! What Lightning node is your primary?
New self-hosted #Bitcoin Lightning address in place! Anyone want to try a zap?
Vitalik has apparently realized that a decentralized PoS blockchain doesn’t really work and is now suggesting cutting down the number of validators drastically in order to reduce complexity and potential attack surface. Imo, this further proves that PoS can never be anywhere near as decentralized as #Bitcoin. And that’s perhaps okay. We can have a eco system of blockchain based app platforms, and then we have #Bitcoin for payments and global financial infrastructure.
Totally agree. Starting a new node now would be a pretty costly undertaking
How do I zap a post on #Damus now?
Running Nextcloud on the same server as your Bitcoin and Lightning node isn’t the best idea. 😬
What’s the #LightningNetwork’s biggest challenge and how can it be overcome?
Instead of 'running a node' becoming a hobby in itself, I suggest installing a distro like nostr:npub1aghreq2dpz3h3799hrawev5gf5zc2kt4ch9ykhp9utt0jd3gdu2qtlmhct to make it a lot easier to set-up and be able to install other apps like #mempool, #electrum, #Nostr relay, and many others.
Tip: don't install on a raspberry pi but use a fanless industrial PC with a large SSD instead. If cost is not an option, they also sell pre-installed umbrel nodes but otherwise install #Ubuntu Linux on it, then install umbrel. This way you'll have enough space to run the other cool 😎 apps from the umbrel app store without running into performance issues. #bitcoin #node

Umbrel is a great way to quickly spin up a Lightning node, but you lose flexibility and control. You rely on Umbrel/app devs to push out updates so you’re constantly behind on important software stacks such as lnd. Worth keeping in mind. However, building a node from scratch is certainly not for everyone so it’s great that turnkey solutions exists.
The comments on https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38718544 are proof that we can't make "just apps" and have people use them without knowing that Nostr is a thing. Users must know.
And in fact I think it is much easier to teach people about Nostr than about why your damn app doesn't have email+password login and where is it storing things and how does moderation work without telling them about Nostr.
And when they finally understand the basics of Nostr they will suddenly understand everything about not only your app, but about all other Nostr clients.
My biggest gripe with Nostr for now is indeed the need to submit your private key to sign in to apps. I haven’t followed Nostr development closely but why isn’t message signing the one and only way to log in?
So many really nice apps built on #nostr. Competing for the social media market is almost impossible but a great user experience comes a long way. Still very early days!
Thanks for the tips! I’ll check them out!
Any good #Bitcoin/Lightning centric crowdfunding platforms out there?
What’s your favorite #Bitcoin book? I love the Bitcoin Standard but Saif’s rants on non-economic topics such as meat, climate, and vaccines alienates a lot of potential readers imo. I’ve heard great things about Lynn Alden’s “Broken Money”.
My Nostr predictions for 2024
Today marks one year since I joined Nostr. It’s been a crazy year, but I have a feeling that 2024 is going to be much crazier. Here are some predictions:
1. Nostr social media clients will become insanely good. By the end of the year we will surpass the legacy social media clients in terms of UX and features, making them look like relics of the past.
2. More lightning wallets will implement Nostr integration. By the end of the year Nostr will become a de facto standard public lightning directory.
3. The bitcoin bull run will bring more users to Nostr, adding more gravity to the network.
4. At some point, a massive new cohort of users will join Nostr. We won’t be ready for them. Relays and other services (indexers, media hosting, etc.) will struggle to support them. After some hiccups, the Nostr ecosystem will adjust.
5. With the increased network activity, spammers will return in force. They will be sophisticated and relentless, putting all of our spam mitigation services to the test.
6. Long form notes will become much bigger on Nostr.
7. At least one “other stuff” content type will take off in a meaningful way.
8. Nostr’s censorship resistance capabilities will get tested in a major public episode.
9. The AI community will get much more interested in Nostr. They will be attracted by the idea that open source language models, combined with Nostr’s open social graph and publicly accessible data - could actually democratize AI.
10. By the end of the year everyone - even the haters - will realize that Nostr is going to win.
11. nostr:npub1qny3tkh0acurzla8x3zy4nhrjz5zd8l9sy9jys09umwng00manysew95gx will accuse me of not being bullish enough.
Anyhow, GM ☀️ and Merry Christmas! 🎄🎅🏻
Loving the predictions. To be honest I’m not as optimistic. I reckon Nostr in a year will be in a vaguely similar state as today. The user experience is amazing and the people are friendly but it’s basically a #Bitcoin echo chamber for now.
The world needs more TUI apps! And as the story goes, if you want something done you better do it yourself.
No, but the channel initiator has to pay for the force close transaction.
Abolishing taxes? How do you intend to pay for basic infrastructure?
