What do you mean it’s taboo? People are completely against it? - I live in the UK and most people I chat to think it’s a joke. I always say if you have $1,000 invested then go self custody. If it’s Bitcoin only, you can pick up hardware wallets from $60-250 - personally I’d go for the $250 one I mention here as that will last you a good 5+ years.
Also there’s a saying - not your keys not your coins - what that means is if you leave Bitcoin on an exchange, the exchange own it. If they ever go down your bitcoin goes with them. Hence self custody is super important as you hold the private key and seed phrase for your own wealth being in full control.
