It’s not. My dad was diesel mechanic and has owned several. My best friend fixes cars for a living and own 6 diesels (lol) and he turned me on to TDIs. As he says without hesitation, “they’re the best cars.” And they are. My sister has a TDI and my brother has 2 also 😂 my dad and another friend of my mine all own ford 7.3 liter diesel from 2001-2002. All have been insanely reliable.

Try to exist in more remote areas for 3-6 months at a time every year.

I had a mk4 TDI and got 300k miles from the motor before I sold it. It never missed a start, leaked no oil, got 40mpg and was still running strong when I sold her. Miss that vehicle.

I got another TDI that is an absolute beast and I own a 7.3 Liter Ford power stroke f250 that has 250k miles and it works perfectly, leaks no oil. Can’t beat the diesels.

I don’t necessarily think it’s a “guaranteed failure”, it’s a free market, if relays perform a service well then more users will add them. If they start to do things like censoring users, etc, people will drop them and search for alternatives quickly.

Just the car example alone is enough. To extend it, I remember as a kid in the early 80s in Canadian winter having to *always* plug the car in (for the engine block heater) and my parents pumping the gas while turning the ignition and *praying* it would start in the morning. I remember more than one occasion my dad would call in to work saying he'd be late because the car wouldn't start and that he had to take the bus. I tell younger people this and they find it absolutely mind blowing. Nowadays, I almost never plug my car in during winter and it pretty much always starts first try, even in the closest of weather. Any car made in the last 20-30 years, cold weather starts are mostly a non-issue.
