I think there is a genuine conversation to be had about that fundamental decision, and an opportunity to bring the combo back to why you wanted to build it with those design decisions in the first place.
Even if they are "those kind of people" (not making that judgement myself), why not rise above instead of lowering to attacks on them?
I guess I am curious to hear more about the project, and understand the points above.

Cherry picking programs that ‘may’ get impacted like the VA paints a picture in my mind that all these cuts are bad, when some may be bad, and some may be very warranted.
