Got a nice garden with things spaced out nicely but you're forever battling weeds?
Nature abhors a vacuum so if you don't fill a space, the weeds will gladly fill it for you.
One of the best ground covers I know of is sweet potato. With edible leaves that are great in salads and tubers that roast up beautifully, it's a great looking yet functional ground cover. Best thing is, it's dead easy to grow.

The chilli and capsicum (Bell peppers for some) seedlings got too big for their little pots so they got moved to their own spot last night.

They both break down together to enrich the soil, the cardboard stops the grass from growing back up through the new garden bed and taking over again. It's one of those varieties that just keeps coming back if you don't cover it.
Not the first time I've done this, it works a treat. It's not as fast as just using a rotary hoe and then planting but it's worth it for the reduction in weeds

I've got a great little 2 stroke rotary hoe but it needs some work to get it going again and I just haven't had the time so I was looking for another way to get this new garden underway.
Gave the blade on the edger a sharpen with the angle grinder and then hit the new garden bed with it, it's not the same as the rotary hoe but it's saved a lot of time with a shovel!

The local council has a waste disposal scheme they call FoGo (food organics and garden organics) - the idea is all the organic stuff goes in a separate bin, gets collected by a diesel truck, gets processed and composted by diesel machinery then if you want mulch or compost, you can pay them to deliver it to you in another diesel truck.
Trust bureaucrats to make it overly complicated and costly 🙄🤦♂️
I've eliminated the need for the FoGo bin by composting all the organic waste right here in my own yard. I know not everyone can do this or has the inclination to do it but it's just another case of bureaucrats dreaming up costly programs they claim is good for the environment but is it really that good when there's so much machinery involved?

Tearing up this section of lawn has served more than one purpose. For work I've been on a project that generated a lot of cardboard packaging waste - rather than paying disposal fees, why not put it to better use?
I've dug down about 300mm deep, put the grass I tore out at the bottom and covered it with cardboard, this can all break down and enrich the soil while forming a bit if a barrier to stop the grass growing back through.
I'm using nothing but hand tools so this is going to take a while, I'll keep posting updates as I go. This is probably the biggest patch I've ever done on this block but don't be afraid to give it a go at your own place.

Lawns. Just about every suburban house has one but how much time, effort and money do we put into maintaining that green carpet just so it can look like everyone else's front yard?
As #geofflawton said, the only good use for lawn is to turn it into mulch! So that's what I've started doing. Over time I've been converting edge spaces into strips of garden and now I'm tackling the main space to landscape the front yard into a productive food growing space.
Part one was to mark out the space in the shape I wanted to blend into the other existing garden spaces, then shred as much as I could with the edger to make life easier when it comes to ripping out the grass.
