Rough day of being a new #chicken owner today.

I had to cull a chicken and butcher it today. Sunny (youngest dog) got ahold of our best egg layer when the electric fence was off during the power outage and it seemed like it was doing better the past two days. Came home today and the other hens were eating it alive from the bite wound.

Lesson learned: 1. Any time you have an injured chicken be sure to isolate it to let it get back to full health. 2. I got a solar energizer for the chicken fence so we don’t have to rely on the grid power.

The one positive is we ended up with about 2lbs of chicken we’re going to eat tomorrow.

Good luck with repairs. Hopefully it didn’t cause too much damage

When the power is out it’s time to improvise.

Thanks Free. We’re making do. Came back on through the night and back off today with temps approaching 0° now. Just glad I had some wood reserve for the fireplace.

I’m in a similar boat. I read chickens will do okay down to -20 as long as they are dry and out of the wind. This is a learning process though. I never had any family to teach me this lifestyle so it’s all trial and error. Hope your hens make it fine. Lucky our power is back on. We’ll see how long it lasts.

Fire has definitely been going strong all day. That’s the only thing keeping the sanity. I know at the end of the day fire will keep us warm, cook us food, and clean our water.

Power has been off all day with 15°f temps. Talk about scary. We have plenty of family in the area but I don’t want to just abandon ship.

Fixed the chicken coop to get them out of the wind. Ran the fireplace all day to keep some heat in the house. Ended up only getting down to 58° so it wasn’t too bad. All in all, we need to be better prepared for the cold. We are 100% electric so a backup generator would be ideal. Maybe some batteries for the solar system will help as well. Although times like this suck, it’s a good test o see how truly prepared we actually are.
