•POSEIDON• (Neptune in Roman mythology)
Greek god of the sea and eartquakes, he is the son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, making him a brother to Zeus, Hades, Hestia, Demeter, and Hera.
After the Titanomachy, the war where the Olympian gods overthrew the Titans, the world was divided among the three brothers: Zeus got the sky, Hades the underworld, and Poseidon the sea.
Poseidon is often portrayed as moody and tempestuous, much like the sea he governs. he symbolizes the depths and turbulence of human emotions, that can be calm and serene or stormy and chaotic 🌊

tattoo of "Girl with a Pearl Earring" painted in 1665 by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer
the identity of the girl in the original painting remains unknown
The ancient Romans used myths to explain occurrences in the natural world and the story of Proserpina's abduction was told to explain why there is winter:
Pluto was a lonely deity who lived in the gloomy underworld and rarely encountered others. Taking pity on him, Venus (Goddess of love and passion) told her son Cupid to fire one of his love arrows at Pluto so that he might become smitten with the next woman he saw. That woman was Proserpina, who was frolicking in fields of Nysa. Seized with irrepressible desire, Pluto abducted Proserpina and carried her away into the underworld, domain of the dead.
Following Proserpina’s abduction, Ceres (Goddess of agriculture and harvest) searched everywhere for her missing daughter and, full of sorrow, she neglected her oversight of the growth of crops and fertility of the fields.
As the world became barren, the other gods decided that they must intervene. The messenger God Mercury, who could travel freely between the worlds of the living and the dead, spied Proserpina in Pluto’s possession and quickly informed Jupiter (God of the sky and thunder, king of all the Gods and also father of Prosepina). Jupiter and Ceres went to demand the release of their daughter, but then they realized that Prosepina had become the unwilling bride to pluto and she was now bounded to him and be the queen of the underworld.
Ceres and Pluto argued over the custody of Proserpina and, after realizing neither would be satisfied with the absence of Proserpina in their respective domains, Jupiter dictated that Proserpina would remain with Ceres for half of the year and with Pluto for the the other half.
These periods became known as the seasons: When the daughter was annually fated to return to her husband, Ceres wept for her loss and the crops began to wither as autumn took hold, making way for winter. When Prosperina returned, however, life grew back to the fields and spring and summer reigned until the cycle repeated itself again the next year.
this same story was also told in Greek mythology with Hades (Pluto) abducting Persephone, daughter of Demeter (Ceres) and zeus (Jupiter)

There are many wise gods and goddesses that are featured in Greek mythology but Themis was arguably the wisest of them all. Creating a system that stopped the world from plunging into chaos, the image of Themis represents the pursuit of truth and the notion of impartiality, which justice demands.
Themis was often depicted blinfolded with a sword on one hand and a pair of scales on the other:
The blindfold represents impartiality; the idea that justice should be applied to everyone regardless of wealth, power or status.
The sword represents her ability to cut fact from fiction; there was no middle ground, you were either lying or telling the truth and she could not be fooled.
The pair of scales represents her ability to weigh out facts and determine whether someone should be punished for their crime or not (an image that we also see in Egyptian mythology with Anubis in the underwold weighing the heart of the deceased against the feather of Ma’at, goddess of truth and justice)
It is quite easy to confuse Themis with Nemesis (goddess of wrath and retribution) but Themis was in no way wrathful, she was pragmatic, extremely rational and she never allowed her emotions to influence her decisions.

In Christian theology, Lucifer ("light bringer") was once a high-ranking angel who held a position of great authority in Heaven.
However, Lucifer's pride and desire for power led him to rebel against God, believing that he should be equal to or greater than God Himself. He convinced a faction of angels to join his rebellion resulting in a celestial war in Heaven:
"better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven"
Ultimately, God cast Lucifer and his followers out of Heaven, and they became known as fallen angels or demons.
The story of Lucifer serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of pride, arrogance and the pursuit of power leading to a downfall and loss of integrity. It highlights the eternal struggle between good and evil, and the dual nature of knowledge which can be both liberating and potentially destructive.
"devil is the force that believes knowledge is complete, the intellect falling in love with its own creations"

(leɪˈɑkoʊˌɑn) Laocoön was a Trojan priest who warned the Trojans about the Greeks hiding inside the wooden horse during the Trojan War. According to the myth, Laocoon threw his spear at the horse to expose the Greeks' trickery. However, the gods favored the Greeks, and as punishment for his actions, two giant serpents emerged from the sea and strangled Laocoön and his sons to death. The myth of Laocoön is often depicted in art and literature as a cautionary tale about the consequences of challenging divine will.

"Son, make sure to take the middle way, do not fly too low, for the sea vapours will dampen the feathers and the weight will drag you down. Do not fly too high, for the sun will melt the wax away, and you will fall down.”
To escape imprisonment by King Minos, Icarus’ father Daedalus fashioned two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers for himself and Icarus, enabling them to fly. The son promised to follow his father’s advice, but as he started flying the thrill took over his young and easily enchanted mind. He flew higher and higher totally lost in his amazement of soaring with the birds. Soon, the wax started dripping off, the feathers began falling down and he plummeted to the sea to drown as his father watched helplessly.
This Greek myth is a tragic but necessary tale of moderation and caution. It highlights the carelessness of youth, teaching us to remain level-headed by warning against the pursuit of instant gratification.

Throughout history, the collective human imagination has created multiple stories in an attempt to give explanations for the deepest problems we face as a species. The story of Adam and Eve is a great example of this; a story that represents the emergence of self-consciousness in humans as a catastrophic event of cosmical proportions:
When Eve ate the fruit from God's forbidden tree (knowledge) and gave it to Adam after listening to the snake (temptation), both suddenly realized they were naked and covered themselves in shame (beginning of culture), next they felt sorry and remorseful for disobeying God (development of ethics and a moral compass). and God punished them for their disobedience by banishing them from the Garden of Eden: Adam was cursed with a lifetime of hard labor until death and Eve was cursed with the pain of childbirth.
All these predicaments are uniquely human and interestingly linked to knowledge:
- Beginning of culture and emergence of ethics: Animals are not ashamed of their nakedness or feel sorry for their primal instincts, they are not good or evil (even when they do something we consider bad by human standards we don't judge them as such) because they are not self-aware, they didn't eat the fruit of knowledge.
- A lifetime of hard labor: we are punished to work because we are aware of our own vulnerabilities and our own mortality, and that forces us to sacrifice our present for our future hoping to ease our inevitable fall. it is the consequence of eating the fruit of knowledge.
- The pain of childbirth (why Eve gave the apple to Adam): tempted to be safe from predators (snake), females shaped the evolution of the species by naturally selecting mates with higher intelligence above other qualities, which made humans develop larger brain sizes over time leading to more pain and difficulties in childbirth (and contributing to the long time it takes for children to get programmed and developed, making them incredibly dependant for many years. it is the consequence of eating the fruit of knowledge.
Our hunger for knowledge cursed us with the unexpected consequences of waking up from unconscious paradise.

Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, represents the human desire for liberation, self-expression, and the pursuit of pleasure. He embodies the primal aspects of human nature, encouraging individuals to embrace their uninhibited impulses and tap into their creative energies. It is linked to the subconscious and the transformative power of altered states of consciousness, the human psyche's need for catharsis, release, and connection to the mysterious and irrational aspects of life.
