Building Satellite https://satellite.earth 🏴

Hey there

> Can there be multiple communities with the same name?

Sort of. Communities are "namespaced" to the pubkey of the person who founded them. So for example, there is not a single, global n/. Rather, I can start a community like n// and you can start another community like n/AI/. This allows competition among moderators and prevents people from squatting valuable names (unlike reddit where the first person to register a name owns that name globally, forever).

> Is there a way to change the community "metadata" (name, logo, description, rules, mods) after creation?

Yes. On https://satellite.earth, you'll see a list of all the communities that you've founded or are a moderator of in the 'Communities' section when signed in. If you click 'Settings' next to one of your communities it will bring up a form where you can edit its metadata.

> Anyone building a way to check the size and health of each community (number of followers, number of posts)?

I'm working on that right now actually! (assume others are as well)

Thanks! It's a super basic implementation right now, there is so much potential with communities I think

nostr:npub1lunaq893u4hmtpvqxpk8hfmtkqmm7ggutdtnc4hyuux2skr4ttcqr827lj How do I start a Community on satellite.earth? I don't see a link on my browser, using Brave.

In the communities section of the menu there’s a “New Community” button at the top right

Communities on Satellite are like group chats with moderators. Presently the governance is very simple (just nominating mods and approving posts). In the future there will be new capabilities for use cases beyond content aggregation.

It's because none of those other things are real alternatives, and it's easier to see things that lend themselves to easy comparison.

It's harder to say what nostr *is* even for those of us here building everyday — we usually end up talking about first principles. This is a clue that what's happening here is actually something new.

So I created a community on nostr.kiwi to test things but I noticed the community only shows up on nostr.kiwi . Should I have created it via satellite.earth instead? Should it matter where the community is created? Link to community:

So I just checked a bunch of relays and couldn't find the metadata for the community — do you know which relays it was published to from nostr.kiwi? If not I would recommend trying to republish the community. As long as it has the same name the new version will just update the old one.

Hmm, it should definitely show up on Satellite as well, at this link:

I'm not sure what the issue is — the only thing I can think of is that the event was not published to any of the default relays that Satellite uses for non signed in users. Are you signed in to Satellite? If you sign in Satellite will connect to your preferred relays so the event might show up.

I don’t always listen to Lex Fridman, but when I do, it’s a George Hotz interview

Anyone remember Khan Academy? What would it take to build an AI-powered version of that on Nostr?

Like a nostr community with a chatbot where you can post questions and get explanations.

The problem with Lemmy (and likewise Mastodon, being based on ActivityPub) is that everyone's data is still siloed and subject to being deleted at the whim of the person running the instance.
