We can never guarantee that governments will not make it illegal to use bitcoin in a pseudonymous way. Depending on technology we can make it more or less difficult.
For example, It is much harder to limit the freedom of individuals than it is to limit the freedom companies are allowed to give customers.
Further, torrenting is a good example of technology making legislation inefficient even if it actually becomes illegal for individuals.
I care about buying groceries with bitcoin. Government can and and should ask questions if large unexplained sums appear. That does not mean that we should be ok with every transaction beein de-anonymized.
There is still a value in moving away from the current system where all interactions with digital money is through companies with KYC requirements.
My fear is that we just recreate the current system but with lightning as a settlement layer. We should aim to win back more freedoms than that.
Loss of funds is not my primary concern.
I see a clear risk that KYC-free custodial LN wallets will go the way of the KYC-free exchange.
Non bitcoin/nostr-dev content
Could maybe be bootstrapped with good account switching UX as bitcoiners have other interests as well. Normalize and make it easy to have multiple accounts for different interests.
Better search and suggestions for people to get past the spam and bitcoiner content.
Companies making billions in profits and firing people beacuse they updated their excel sheets with a new risk free rate to discount future earnings.
If you want to do really fancy stuff with containers take a look at the SDKs. You can run either docker or podman as the backend. https://podman.io/blogs/2020/08/10/podman-go-bindings.html
The hardware wallet will make it really hard to take your bitcoin even if your main computer/phone is compromised. The steel backup protects you from the even larger dangers to your bitcoin: water, fire, and someone cleaning out your papers.
Will of course depend on the amount of bitcoin and your threat model. Hardware wallet with a metal seed backup is a sweet spot for many. For example a coldcard + cryptosteel capsule.
Alright, that is what I hoped for.
I might not share you deep suspicion of government (not growing up in the US probably helped 😅) But "the problem is real even if I hate all the solutions I can think of" is coherent and impressive position.
Decentralization is really hard. But I am sceptical the solution lies in the buzzwords I hear at work.
Sometimes it's is simplicity and limitations that foster the greatest innovations. In many cases less is more.
I know climate change has ended up on one side of that weird "culture war" or whatever Americans are up to. But do you really think that climate change is not a major concern?
Decentralization has a network effect. Also the initial userbase preferences.
I am using fedora silverblue. There is also a more traditional fedora workstation just like there are different flavors of Ubuntu.
A tip is to try them out in GNOME boxes. That way you do not need to reinstall the entire computer to try out something new.
There are no wrong choices, pick what works well for you.
Just uninstalled Twitter from my phone. That platform meant a lot to me, but enough is enough. Indirectly supporting that heartless asshole has stopped being an option. Will spend the time saved cuddling with the dog and working on my nostr relay.
What is roughly the difference between relay implementations? Working on my own relay (mostly for fun and learning). Would be nice if it ended up in the "easy to get a client working with" category 😅
