If you want privacy, using a literal ledger is a category error. Every attempt to load privacy into a literal record of all transactions is going to be, at best, a work around.

There are coins designed to be private, and I'm, happy to accept that they are, but BTC isn't one of them.

The State will decide how much privacy you can have with BTC - mainly of course, it simply doesn't care, until it thinks you are breaking laws to the extent that the effort is warranted.

KYC Free is largely an illusion.

No one cares about buying groceries with BTC, but at scale, buying a house after the next 20x, buying and taxing a car etc, you get KYC's then, and, if your Gvt is interested, the fact that, until then, you were KYC free, is moot.

Will of course depend on the amount of bitcoin and your threat model. Hardware wallet with a metal seed backup is a sweet spot for many. For example a coldcard + cryptosteel capsule.

The post you are replying to is a joke, it makes no statement as to my own person opinion on any of these topics. The point is that the world elite all care about these things, so these things are great "bait" to lure them into a ship where we can ship them off to space and be rid of them.

My personal opinion is that free markets and distributed solutions are the first tool to reach for when you have a problem. But they don't work for everything, and climate change is one of those problems that cannot be solved bottom up... which is really tragic because nothing seems to be solvable top down without yielding too much power and that power will be used for lots of other shit it shouldn't be used for. So yes climate change is real and a serious concern and has to be solved and it cannot be solved bottom up. And whatever top-down solutions come at us are virtually guaranteed to have massive negative side effects designed to enrich the elite, ... and many will cheat if they can, including nations, which means "we can't work together to save our lives". and well... life sucks but there it is. It might not even be worth trying given the game theory. I don't know. We seem to have solved the CFC ozone hole issue collectively so I think it's possible, so I'm still in favor of government action... I just fear the nutty people making the decisions.

The challenge I see however is being honest, centralisation is easier. Decentralisation is harder.

Many things solved for big tech doesn’t work well for decentralised (discovery, spam, data persistence, availability, etc).

We basically need to reinvent ways to do these things - and often on smaller lower powered devices like mobiles.

Until we can make things simple, sometimes we just need to make them work first.

It’s a critical take on Nostr, but if we distill the core innovation - it’s the simple cryptographic Event JSON payload - and the protocol’s openness.

Websocket relays are ok, but Nostr can work over hybrid p2p or REST. The query engine is ok, but it’s basic and has design faults and limitations.

So why write this post?

I think we can expand on todays relays and evolve the event transport layer, likely to many simultaneous methods including a p2p layer, and greater privacy.

I think we can reimagine the event query engine, allowing for more performant and expressive queries. Perhaps GraphQL, maybe feature from new streaming databases like SurrealDB.

I think if we open the box a little more, we can start to explore new and powerful innovations that can expand upon the NIP-01 primitives.

If we start to experiment and challenge ourselves to discover new ways to make Nostr unstoppable, I think we will find amazing new capabilities are possible and bring forth a wave of communications innovation.

I would argue that nostr-irc is the fastest client for new events. Raw websocket connection in a running console with no image parsing, no link previews, some LND invoice regex, and other tricks provide a stream of steady text.

I’m currently working on fixing things to work with all relays. Certain relays have a different stack and responses that I need to figure out next. Relays like nos.lol and relay.damus.io fly.
