Hol' up, what you mean? Like safe for kids?

Like with content for kids and yes, safe for kids.

I'd be down for that. It's hard to train the kid on this stuff without exposing him to all kinds of things I don't want to explain just yet.

We have an 8 year old chomping at the bit to be involved. We let him chat in cornychat with some of the folks we interact with regularly there. But there's so much bad in the world that I really don't want him unsupervised.

Same situation here. They're the ones who'll keep this running. We have to get them involved somehow, but maybe not learn about goatse for a few years still.

Ugh.

No thanks.

That's asking to get locked up or shot.

Seems to me this is only possible with dedicated relays. nostr:npub1m4ny6hjqzepn4rxknuq94c2gpqzr29ufkkw7ttcxyak7v43n6vvsajc2jl has ideas

I was wondering about that. I feel like it could be easy to do with dedicated relays but I feel like there needs to be some sort of parental oversight. I mean, the best oversight is us being active but kids have devices everywhere you turn these days.

Maybe I’m naive, but my strategy is going to be that screen time is together time. Most of the time I want to be present and talking about what my kids are seeing and doing. Make it a bonding experience. I think this may be able to mitigate many of the dangers we see from kids online.

i like this approach.

being present and in the moment makes it the most meaningful. <3

This is deffo the best way. Unsupervised screen time is detrimental in so many ways.

Need a community with a dedicated AUTH relay and a moderator that actually looks at the relay content. I read through theforest relay, day after day. Basically like moderating a forum, but with lots of different kinds of data, including videos, books, chats, etc.

You can get AI to give you hints of what to double-check, but you need a human deciding, in the end.

Certain accounts always post reasonably kid friendly stuff. Like nostr:npub1sur5gd3mrfvcd4nh8dtsdh0ztrqrnaknff0lcfcfz5pn56n8eqkqv9sm0l and nostr:npub1tlgqfynfdyup4s4m8ge8yqpkm8ukxtfflv3dcxl4mra3e83x27vqrlj5tp

If there were many more who were trustworthy it might be possible to let a kid have access to a nearly normal Nostr client, but with the only difference being password-protected search and following.

Then you just subscribe your kid to whatever accounts you want them to see only.

Having much better filtering of notes based on keyword, not just hashtag, would also be a great idea.

Just a brainstorm.

You beat me here 😑.

Nyah nyah I love our baby more.

Pfffft

All the notes they'll see is "Do your fucking homework" or "Do your fucking chores". Yes, exactly like that.

Well, fellas...chop chop. The kids want in.

ZBD was the closest thing but that project pulled back or isn’t available anymore.

Let me know if when you find out

Can't devs just make their clients to filter / ignore certain things to be kid friendly?

nostr:npub1l66wvfm7dxhd6wmvpukpjpyhvwtlxzu0qqajqxjfpr4rlfa8hl5qlkfr3q was the first person I heard talk about this. Not sure if he made any progress. I don’t think it would be that hard to do. You just need to have a dedicated kid relay (with moderators) and blacklist a fuck ton of bad words.

I would be more than willing to be a mod.

You can use noshole’s naughty turdsoup word list to start off 😝

Another idea is to use a new kind designated for children. Then the kid client would only render child kinds

Lol, that would be a very good jumping off point for blocked words.

I see we have several ideas. Now we just need the folks creating the clients to tell us whether or not they would work.

I created a relay. You can add it to your relay list to read posts from nostr:npub1falry06qh3ktl6evtf8enl2we9qarflncc299ujpda4kkqkhl7gs3995cd , a nostrkid. wss://rly.nostrkid.com . Only npubs approved to write can write (kids) anyone can read, zap, etc. I also hacked a Coracle client to force connect to only the nostrkid relay and nothing else and deleted DM capability. This was semi usable for the kid. Kids cannot see what others write on their posts, unless it is a kid on that relay. It was a good start, but much room for improvement. Only on ideas but we need it. Content curated by parents who you can trust. An alternative for YouTube Kids. I wrote some words on this in the past

β€œChild-friendly apps

As a father of two little daughters I would like to use real child-friendly apps when they ask me to view some video for example.

As far as I know, YouTube Kids is the least bad app. The app only works with Google services and a Google account (that’s evil). And when in use it’s obvious to see the dark-pattern design tricks nudging my kids. Educative content publishers for children should be aware of this and take the lead with providing content through child-friendly apps. It should be a clear goal for them to make BigTech absolute when it comes to raising our kids.

Another (maybe better) way is to create a community with parents where we can aggregate and curate content for our kids through an app.”

Nostrifying PeerTube would be an option
