What does web of trust mean to you?
#asknostr
A system that enables us to verify that a user is real (and not a dog) and has a certain, traceable reputation.
How does a person rank higher on your WOT?
They need to have good #OpSec practices. If their accounts or equipment can be easily compromised, it’s hard to trust them in the digital realm.
How do you verify this without meeting this person?
Sometimes you can tell by the services they use, attitudes they have towards privacy and security, what they choose to post on social media, or even what they choose to share with you in private.
Also, it’s obviously not the ONLY consideration, but it’s important.
If I have a good friend, he might be my best friend in the world, we know each other personally and hang out regularly IRL.
I might trust him with my life in some situations, but if he’s a dumbass with technology, eg:
— Uses the same password for everything.
— Leaves his phone unlocked.
— I’m always getting phishing emails from his address because he keeps getting pwned.
Then there’s NO WAY I’m adding him to my digital web of trust.
It means that there isn’t a central entity that determines the trustworthiness of a contact, or note. Instead, my web of trust does the work for me.
What work do you trust your WOT to do for you?
susceptible to manipulation, desired for self-promotion rather than genuine connections. The later is cultivated not networked. Judge by the content of one’s notes, connections don’t define one’s character or values.
How might you build genuine connections, ad opposed to low trust self-promotion?
Rarely does it occur without prolonged dialogue, typically involving at least two shared interests and a common mode of dialectic that sparks a mutual desire to are more about each other than the shared interests.
reputation might be useful in a gated single interest, but the basic foundation of that is simply keeping on that single interest, but in more general context reputation quickly becomes the end instead of a means to an end.
Genuine connections need trust. Trust is a statistical and informatic phenomenon.
Getting trustworthy connections is highly improbable if you don't know the person you are trying to trust. My proposal to circumvent this is to try to scale the energy society can use. Energy can make you able to achieve low-probability high-order events, to swim against entropy. It could make the search for trust feasible in the future.
I am confused
Yeah, energy is confusing. I'm talking about a loose idea, don't take me too seriously.
I just see the connection between trust being a low probability phenomenon and energy being able to achieve improbable states, things that some people could call miracles. I'm not saying how that could be achieved in real life
When I trust someone, I'm likely to trust whom they trust as well. The probability of developing actual trust diminishes with each hop.
it's just another rabbit hole 😔
