Kind of sucks having to check on #Bitaxe miners every day. I've got 4, and none of them are stable enough to make it past 4 or 5 days without needing a restart. Is this typical of #Bitcoin mining in general?
Discussion
Mine have been really stable with the latest firmware. They stay running and connect right back if the internet connection drops.
Mine go the whole day without reconnecting. I'm also running the latest firmware 2.1.8

Damn, so much for the easy fix. Something you could try is a full manual erase and re-flash of the ESP32 via USB and CLI. Make sure the ESP32 is configured properly for your hardware. All the relevant stuff is here: https://github.com/skot/ESP-Miner
On an older FW version, I did have one get "stuck" and doing that helped. I don't know if something gets corrupted, or magic gremlins, or whatever, but it fixed the strange behavior.
Just another thought...I have had one occasionally lose its voltage and frequency settings. Double check in the web console that those didn't get screwed up. When mine did it, they were just blank. Added them back in and everything went back to normal.
at most 48 consecutive hours for me, pretty sucky i agree 😔
early days
the miner can be reset by the controlling computer right? or, maybe you could get a cheap power timer switch and have it switch off 15 minutes every day, no more attending to it
power timer is an option i suppose. still sucks though in comparison to the s9 and futurebit standards that run for weeks on end without me thinking about them.
keep an eye on firmware updates, if it's happening to you and others then probably they are working on a fix
this kind of bug is the hardest kind to squash because it takes so long to happen, and it's really hard to instrument for it
ah yeah, also, maybe you can try alternative controlling apps, and maybe also different bitcoin nodes (though i doubt btcd is worth trying)
Would you mind providing me an example of an alternative controlling app? Also, why do you believe this is related to the node I’m running?
it's been some time since i looked at it but i know there is definitely multiple options for at least several common types of bitcoin miner...
for the most part most of them operate over a serial connection via USB to a computer that is pulling block templates from a local bitcoin node, which is collecting transactions from the p2p network... it definitely helps to make sure you have this part of it right, but i would think that bitcoin core would be fine and you can run your GUI interface and wallet off the same machine, just have to enable the RPC
why i am asking about the node is that if the miner controller is not getting any new block templates it's not going to dispatch work to the miners either, it would be a crazy design for a miner controller to just keep mining for 3 hours with no new templates
I don't know if any of this applies to the BitAxe. Also, if this was an issue with not getting block templates from the pool, wouldn't that affect all of my miners?
not if the problem has to do with its network connection somewhere, but it seems more likely to me that the miner's firmware has a bug
and second to that would be the miner controller software having a bug with that particular device and its USB interface controller, so that's why i'm saying maybe see if you can run a different controller
Sir, you still haven’t given me an example of an alternative controller, and I have no idea if it even applies here. nostr:npub1ql2zzp3g6yndgz05js7wdc4qkr88wkyne5nw2cc7csrtzqs0yeesgwrxya is this possible?
are you trying to be difficult or are you incapable of using a web search engine
https://github.com/skot/bitaxe
yes it has a wifi interface too
Features
- ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 wifi microcontroller on board
- TI TPS40305 buck regulator steps down the 5V input to power the BM1366
- Maxim DS4432U+ current DAC digitally adjusts the BM1366 core voltage from 0.04V to 2.4V
- TI INA260 power meter measures the input voltage and current of the miner
- Microchip EMC2101 PWM controls the fan and monitors tach output. BM1366 doesn't support die temp, but we have it placed super close to the ASIC so we can use the internal temp feature.
- 0.91" SSD1306 OLED I2C Display Module
i see at least 6 separate chips in this list
the ESP32 is the thing that will have a firmware, the other parts look like mostly nonconfigurable dumb components
also, ugh, i hate wifi, just another extra thing that is gonna not work, and it has an on-board processor that is fancy enough to run a 15 year old version of android
i also see there hasn't been any updates to it in 2 months, by the repository
there must be forums to discuss issues with them, probably guys who are hacking them, who may be able to answer your questions
complaining to me about this is not going to fix your problem
i'd just get a timer switch that turns it off 15 minutes a day and forget about it if it runs all day ok like that, or maybe make it turn off twice, 3 or 4 times a day to be sure
Yeah I searched and found that information but it doesn’t match what you’re saying about usb serial connections and alternative controllers, which you still haven’t clarified. It seems like you’re resorting to being a dick because you decided to search yourself after providing relatively useless information.
But, please queen, do go on.
if i got miners i would set them on timers so they only run during the electricity off-peak tariff times anyhow, zero sense in spending expensive power when you can get it cheap, maybe slower ROI but it will most likely be greater
Electricity costs $0.132 per day for all 4 miners. I expect $0 ROI for this lottery operation.
well if you use a pool you'll at least get free heating
This shouldn’t be happening. (It doesn’t on my end). I’d like to figure out what it is about your setup that is causing this. Are you on the OSMU Discord?
I have same issues. Reported it a while ago you guys were saying that i have issues with WiFi and that’s not true bcs Avalon has no issues with connections over 2 weeks
Are you able to see the bitaxe disconnecting from your wifi AP logs? What brand router do you have? Bitaxe wifi is 2.4GHz only and kinda primitive.
I will try and reach out via discord later today
Hate to pile on but this is my experience as well, assumed it was expected. Fwiw device does not appear to reboot, but session uptime is between 1-4 days max
