Metal music helps develop in the listener an aesthetic sense that can lead to a greater appreciation of classical music.

Just skip the trash metal and listen to classical.

(Some metal isn't trash. Most is.)

This came to mind because I was listening to an album by Artificial Language the other day, and was thinking "Wow this sounds really classical, I think that's why I like it."

I've listened to more classical music since I started getting into metal, and I think there's a link.

Perhaps black metal especially (might not be your thing). Stuff like Emperor, might be an obvious suggestion but still.

I'm with you Beave. Skip the metal and just listen to some great classical music.

Hell yeah 🤘

Also argue that metal can help develop an appreciation for narrative and poetry. Lots of lyrics in the music I listen are abstract and pretty creative 🙂

That makes sense to me!

I often have a hard time picking out all the lyrics on the first several listens, though, so I can't speak to that as directly.

One thing I do notice is that many metal bands treat the voice as another instrument in the arrangement, rather than the sole star of the show. It cooperates along with the instruments in telling a story or conveying meaning.

Contrast that to vocal-heavy pop groups.
