I had a Twitter account for three months. I could feel the algorithm making me ill. It should come with a warning label, not Terms of Service.

And then you see things on nostr and you smile 🫡

Seems intentional

The algo is there to spur emotion and engagement. Its amazing how much I see on the feed there that after 5 seconds of searching you realize is fake news. So much garbage. Sadly its still a bad habit I have, heading to Twitter for news.

Sometimes when I’m scrolling on Damus and I pause to look at a video or picture, I still think, “oh shit, I can’t stop on this or the algorithm will think I want to see more of this”. Then i remember, there is no algorithm and I get back to doom scrolling in peace. It’s really quite lovely.

What's sad is the effect it has on otherwise rational, smart and polite people. Ragebaiting is like a virus that infects the minds of such people and keeps them engaged and trapped somehow.

Twitter = Destructive Network

Are you a real bitcoiner if you don’t feel a lil mad?

I have a different experience.

Twitter breaks news faster than almost anyplace else (although you have to filter for non-bullshit sources), and plenty of financial accounts post great content (charts and analysis). There’s a close knit community of tradfi people (again, after some filtering out of bullshit). There are other close knit communities as well.

There are cool accounts for architecture, art, animals, engineering stuff, etc.

I turn on notifications for a small subset of accounts I follow to prioritize them. Basically I build my own algorithm.

Works great. Rarely mad. It’s one of my best sources of initial tradfi research and then also cat and parrot videos at the same time, so that’s nice.

Algorithms maximize engagement. One way to do that is make you mad.

Everything i see on nostr makes me smile. Thats an unexpected side effect.

I had a hard time to describe how I feel about Twitter. It was negative, but still I was missing the words. I think it goes in the same direction as you described.

Also, it is really strange. Here on Nostr, I actually am not afraid of being banned because of what I want to say.

At this point, if you go to twitter, you are mad.

Just in the more british sense of the word.

So called "influencers" will be the only ones left and when they realize they are selling away their lives to Meta and X instead of earning #bitcoin on #nostr they will start having mental breakdowns. Traditional social media is for losers.

#nostriches get paid in high value digital currency.
