Today's houses are built in 30 days, paid for 30+years, and usually only last like 50 years (which by that time all major elements - like the roof, water heater, heating/AC have actually already been replaced several times..all plumbing too. Homes are not built to last. Like everything else in fiat world, churn and burn.
