personally, I don’t consider myself being free or having sovereignty/control over my online presence if I can’t delete or correct a typo let alone anything else on this short list.

the current circumstance is ripe for “nostr” becoming a verb in a really unfortunate way. “lol did you see so-and-so got nostr-ed last night when someone posted _______ on their timeline.” now it’s there forever.

how’s that work for the adoption of “freedom tech”? do we feel better bc some bad actors can’t delete their scam trades? how much thought has been put into all the ways permanent visibility can be used maliciously? what about by organizations, authorities, and governments? publicly forever breadcrumbs are a fed’s wet dream. like every send should come with a miranda warning.

Do you consider yourself free for not being able to “delete” speech you may have said in the past? When you want to correct things you have said in the past, you generally paraphrase what you said and explain how your thoughts changed

"What about drunk post..."

Lol

It'd be cool to have a ctrl-z to drunk driving and wrecking bones and places, wouldn't it?

There, hello again. Sorry for the laugh. However now you see, that precisely is what is often meant about the idea of "accountability", that could be in this case, to be able to take a new stance in-related to the previous one. There it could be where the idea of "deleting something in the internet" could get messy.

Probably the closest way to get a deletion in the way I think you're imagining, it would be by running and moderating your own relay, —and that by the way isn't so difficult these days—; other way could also being to encrypt the events you share so is only readable by those that you can decide where to speak in total privacy and security.

¡Saludos!

of course these things need to be discussed. 🤝 just don’t stop at the drunk post example. go down the list. it’s the tip of the iceberg. come up with your own nightmare scenarios. this isn’t as black and white as “personal responsibility or accountability”. some things should never be permanently public or weaponized against your will.

as bad as it can possibly get, not having sovereignty over a typo is already too far for me and demands a solution.

it really would. and if there were a way to make that possible we need to do it.

in the meantime we can figure out how to make deleting notes an actual sovereign thing. with the user in control, not the client or relays.

but back to drunk driving, even though it isn’t apples to apples, you shouldn’t get stuck with forever consequences if someone stole your car and went on a drunk joy ride. the equivalent of that can happen on nostr today.

Wait, if you :

rage post

misquote

personal attack

make threats

-> get some control over yourself, or owe up to your mistakes

blackmail

doxx locations

post social security numbers

make medical info public

postr revenge porn

post child porn

post your mother being mutilated

post national security codes...|

-> my man, you should check yourself in 😂

If others do it, you still wouldn't have any control over it because it is not an nsec you control 🤔

The losing phone or nsec exposed: Tough luck, same as with emotional posts: ... make it public and same as 'others do it' : you cannot control what others do with your nsec if they have it,... being able to edit/delete a post is not going to help.

give this some more thought and get back to me
