Miljan, brother, would it be a problem for you to explain why all of these individuals are removed from being able to trend? I'm sure you have good reasons and I'm also sure this is a pain in the ass, but I feel transparency here is best. As Bitcoiners and Nostriches, we love freedom. You know this well. I also know that you're trying to build a top tier experience on Nostr and filtering spam is key in part of obtaining that goal. It's a hard balance. I get this! But I also believe to be the best, you have to sometimes do a bit more explaining than you thought was needed. We'd all like to know why these people were signaled out. It doesn't have to be overly in depth. Just some clarification. Thanks.
Discussion
Thanks for the constructive and nuanced question Derek!
Sure, happy to explain. Our approach here is very simple. At this time there are only two reasons why an account would end up on the "can't trend" list:
1. They are spamming or gaming the trending algo. We curate this list manually to best of our abilities, while we work on improving the algo.
2. They post adult content. We don't have anything against adult content per se, we don't block it elsewhere. Our decision is simply to not promote it in the trending feed because that's not the type of service we are building.
If anyone thinks they ended up on the can't trend list erroneously, please let us know and we will take a look.
I do get the adult content issue. It's your choice as not everyone wants to or should see that. You don't want that service. Again, I get it. Do I want my 14 year old son that uses Nostr to see it? No, but I also know he can Google boobs and find it. Anyways, I truly to wonder if you could look into using filters that specifically look for that type of content instead of that user profile altogether. For example, Onyx.Vixen posts a lot of non-adult content. I like seeing her non-nude photos. I assume this could eventually be done with AI and image scanning. Would this be something for you to explore in the future?
There's a trend list?
Clients such as primal, snort, and Iris have this feature. Others may too.
Entonces si querés construir algo distinto no es #nostr el indicado para ti, arrancaste bien eras prometedor pero no es la transparencia que necesita nostr
1. Aren't yall the ones gaming the algo?
May I humbly suggest the option to turn off the trending and/or follow suggestions sidebar? With the uBlock Origin addon this is done with the "enter element picker mode" option, but it would be nice to recover the page width for the sidebar and have the search move elsewhere when sidebar is removed. My reason is that muted accounts still show up in the sidebar, and most of the trending posts are useless things like "good morning", etc.
Thanks for your work!
