I actually hate mobile apps. Do you want to be cucked by Apple or cucked by Google? Or if you prefer, you can try React Native and by cucked by both Apple and Google at the same time. It feels like being stuck in the crossfire of two evil corporations. It's the app store industrial complex. Because they control the distribution platform, so they can bully you into conforming to their arbitrary demands.

Computers were built by hackers, and Free Software fought against its control for decades. Now to many people, smartphones are the ONLY computers, which were first built as TOYS. Now we're still working backwards to having freedom on them.

And yet, people "NEED" native apps. They cannot comprehend anything but clicking "Install" in the app store. So it's almost like we've been forced into doing it.

Native app experience usually better.

Indeed. I hate walled gardens and the entire concept of app stores, but not the native apps. You should just be able to download and install them from a website.

How do you get updates when you install from a website?

I kind of enjoy watching people's brain melt when you tell them you're not installing an app. It never gets old.

I think the context matters a lot. If it's a local program, if it connects to many unaffiliated actors, or if I want it always running in the background, then I much prefer to download a raw Android APK off the internet.

If it's for interacting with one organization and if I only want to run it occasionally, then I insist that it be a web service.

I agree with you so much. Kowtowing to peoples lack of willingness to learn to do something as simple as PWAs is crazy. It could literally undermine the entire effort of Nostr.

Thoughts on graphene and installs from obtainium?

I use nostr:nprofile1qydhwumn8ghj7emvv4shxmmwv96x7u3wv3jhvtmjv4kxz7gqyp2x308wkaxwxh95zu7uext5hhdvn6y55a9l84z0nj5tw42xqhy76kavkvg because I'm a thoughtful person with the ability to do it. But the world does not use Graphene or Obtainium/FossDroid/etc, so I cannot build a native app with the idea that average people will truly have the freedom to install it.

Modern development is only worth while if leveraging network effects which are essentially only accessible through walled gardens? That’s quite a challenge to overcome

I set up kid safe Graphene phones for people, with kid a phone tracker logging to Nextcloud. Parents love that their kids can't access internet porn, can't install social media, and the fact their kid's data isn't being harvest and stored forever by Big Tech and 3-letters.

It's not as hard a sell with those benefits.

The Parents and kids have little issue running the phones.

FOSS apks. Build it and people will come?

Browsers are even worse. One example recently they removed support for using local apis.

If i'm using https://example.com i cant access http://192.168... without enabling a flag in the browser settings.

This broke many industrial applications and we had to teach people how to enable that flag.

There's no scape when building applications, every platform there's something that developers use and they will just remove/block or make it unusable

I respect what you and the Amethyst team are doing to provide options not dependent on tyrannical app stores. I'm mad at Apple and Google that it's an uphill battle (smartphone freedom) on top of an already difficult uphill battle (Nostr adoption).

I know, I tried for months to get amber into the play store and when I was almost there they added some spaces at my LLC name, after that I just gave up.

People talk a lot about Apple but Google is way worse when you create a new dev account.

Maybe one day we can finally change this.

Its a pain to get a new app there, but applications showing full screen ads can stay at the play store forever and nothing happens to them.

Every month I have to remove some of those apps from my parents phone because instead of using the files apps from the os they try to install App cleaners from the Play store

This is why rizful.com is web-only. Going through app-store approval is just not something I can do with my life anymore.

👏

I give a 25% - 50% chance however that at some point in the next few years, there will be an act in the U.S. Congress, or a big court cases, that reduces the ability of Google and Apple to censor apps. There's also the "progressive web app" thing which so far, as I can tell, is a disappointment, because you don't get access to the APIs you really need -- but it's possible that this matures into something more powerful.

The cool part is that you can focus your efforts on an awesome Web/desktop experience while I take care of the Android app for you.

And you are a hero for that.

Alex, ill try to give you a good real live community test for ditto but been to busy to try to get the right people together. Working on it

I think you are being unrealistic here, very close minded.

What's your thoughts on Passport Prime from nostr:npub1s0vtkgej33n7ec4d7ycxmwt78up8hpfa30d0yfksrshq7t82mchqynpq6j building a whole new open platform on a device with KeyOS - not designed to be like big tech but rather all open for people to choose at their own will. If and when people build apps on this it could be a very big step into freedom tools.

* I am affiliated I do work there- but curious on your thoughts ? *

phones are computers. No one tells you this but you can just run programs on them ;)

At least with Android, you have .apks

But yeah, I prefer desktops.
