At the same time as bringing attention to this massive issue, I'm also contributing to bounties, submitting PRs, and building resources that help people do things the right way.

But both are needed because if no one is vocal about the dangers of custodial wallets being the norm they will continue to be the norm and never be replaced broadly.

They ARE fine for small amounts! I still haven't seen any of you explain why they aren't.

"how do you think people are going to actually even learn about the self-sovereign path?"

We teach them! I've transitioned people from custodial to non custodial Bitcoin. Happens all the time. People need time to learn. And the tools need to actually be there for the use cases, which they are not yet for nostr. When bolt 12 comes along we'll tell everyone what's up.

Why even use custodial wallets if you know better and know that non-custodial options exist and are quite usable?

If you need an easy to use wallet for onboarding, use Phoenix or Blixt.

Then you can help transition them to running their own node for Zaps etc.

Non custodial options are not "quite usable" when you can't receive zaps.

Have the zaps go to a custodial wallet, for now. It's fine.

I preach Phoenix when I can but it needs to a person who is prepared to deal with the gotchas.

Why do we need to be able to receive zaps this instant?

Just wait, and can use federated LN address tools like satdress to receive tips in the meantime.

Why now? Because it's fun! I have USD in a bank account because a small portion of my money is used for low time preference activities.

It's. Fine.

"federated LN tools like satadress"

IDK about this. If you used your platform to talk about SOLUTIONS like this, that would be AWESOME! Could you tell us more about satadress? Maybe include info about satadress in all your future anti custodial posts?

Edit: High time preference

I do talk about these solutions all the time, and in this very thread linked out to entirely self-sovereign solutions.

Will add to it for these easier onboarding tools.

"In this very thread"

We must have a relay mismatch because I'm not seeing that.

When bashing custodial solutions, an alternative (that can handle zaps) should be front and center in the discussion. Otherwise the complaints are sound and fury signifying nothing.
